My System Specs

Default Card #2

Well fellas my saga continues. I took the 580 in for IPR have to wait up to 5 days for a reply. Thats ok, glad I have it. I come home and move my (gtx 560 Ti 448 core asus dc2) other video card out of pcie slot 2 into 1. Card acts up all sorts of crashes and bsods about hardware or software. Try removing and reinstalling other drivers, I tried legacy drivers and googled error codes for awhile. Finally I tried the evga scanner and precision, both claimed I did not have supported gpu. I checked display-drivers in win7 and low and behold its running msft vga drivers. At this point I removed the card and inserted an older gts 450 I have. It worked fine once I installed the driver yet again. My conclusion is that the gtx 580 that overheated may have contributed to a 560 failure as well since the cards were in pcie slots 1 and 2. They are large cards and there may not have been enough air flow between them. Not sure but tomorrow I will be off to MEMX for another IPR on the 560 Ti. Will keep you posted...sigh.

did you remove the drivers fior the 560ti and then reinstall then to be sure that it isn't just a driver problem with it.

Yes tried several times with a clean install. Each time my screen res was limited to 640 by 480. It was around that point I checked what driver was being used for what I was seeing. It was the msft VGA one. Funny though Nvidia never checks to see if you have a Nvidia product installed. I have had F@H running all out for about an hour now. No issues. This all started with low PPD on the GPU's and enormous (days) for eta's. As the cards began to fail production dropped off a lot. At first this morning I was sure it was just the 580. As of this evening it would appear the 560 is done as well. The only thing I did not try was putting it into another pc. BUT, at the moment I have a 450 that worked in all 3 pcie slots.

Getting your moneys worth out of the IPR anyway. I normally pass on that but, due to issues I have had of late, I will most likely get IPR on certain components.

When it comes to certain things I take the IPR and so far have not had an issue with them. I usually take IPR on headphones, any monitor/tv, and video cards. I have been fortuante with the other components to date. I feel, and find it strange that I lost 2 realitively new gpus in a short time in same case though. Not sure how this will pass. Here I thought I had a bad software install or upgrade. The BSOD mentioned both software or hardware, and I figured at the time it was just the Nvidia driver as at first I had not put in a new card in. Well in a few short hours I will be heading over to see how the next IPR goes. Hehehe 2 in 2 days.

The only other possible common fault I can think of would be your PSU. IIRC the 450 only uses one 6 pin PCIe plug while the 560ti and 580 both use two plugs. If the shop says that both cards are fine that'd be the most obvious culprit.

Good point! I have a 850 watt OCZ ZX PSU in that case. After all the news I have been seeing it may be the culprit. The card was appearing to be folding yet when I hooked the HDMI to it I had 640/480 display that appeared to be like 8 bit. Really messed up. I was concerned the gtx580 and high heat had also baked the MB or PCI slot. I have the x79 sabertooth MB so kept getting high heat warnings from the pcie slot 1 and another spot on the MB. In my other case I have the AX 850 watt Corsair PSU. To be honest I am not sure what the problem is with the 560 so thought I best IPR it since I paid for it. Fans appear fine, only about 2 months old. Do you find gpu's don't last long folding? I do not OC any gpu's only the cpu's since both are water cooled. When I said the card appeared to be folding, I really am not sure. The one machine does about 50-70k PPD while that machine was 40-50 PPD for awhile. I think my problems have been around for awhile. I was just not really aware of it, till the whole thing crashed down.

That may be a possibility, I have been having trouble with one of my rigs that I thought was cpu related. I took it all to MemX for testing and current indications from them is that my 560Ti2WIN is faulty. I find it odd because I did my troubleshooting with a used backup card that I believe to be good. I have a brandy new card at home now so when I get it all together I will determine what is what. Because the 2WIN was almost exclusively used for folding, if it proves to be dead I will have to assume that folding killed it.

Well guys the verdict is in from MEMX. Both cards are being replaced. The GTX580 for 2 failed fans that toasted the card. The replacement will be the GTX670 not sure which vendor or model at this point. The GTX560Ti 448 core was first diagnosed as ok, but I asked the tech to stress it. He said he would but that on his workbench it seemed fine for surfing the net and no obvious glitches. He later called me back and said it could not perform 3D applications and it would be replaced by an exact same model which they still have in stock. I am happy with the outcome and glad I had the IPR. All in all it took 1 business day. Now if I could only get that 670 to fold like the old 580....

Good news that they're replacing the cards with new stock. What model was the 580? It wasn't a twin frozr by any chance? I had issues with my 560ti (standard) twin frozr fans (two cards, both failed twice, so 4 failures total), although I give MSI kudos for quick and painless RMA on them.
