My System Specs

Default CPU Folding setup with very short TPF?

With the heat and whatnot I've had to tone down the O/C on my GTX470. I only fold with it at night and on weekends/holidays where I'm not home anyways and don't have the A/C on. Power consumption+added heat just isn't worth it for me in the summer.

I stopped folding with my Q6600 completely, my northbridge can't take the heat from the Fermi in the bottom plus the big O/C I'd have on my CPU to make the TPF worthwhile. But the Fermi's PPD output makes up for the idle Q6600.

I got a decent pay raise and now I'm looking to start up a new SFF system for folding/personal use.

What I'm looking for is a CPU/client combo that will give me TPF's low enough to finish a typical WU in a few hours. (for example, a i7 980x in a matx system with a mild O/C finishing basic SMP WU's in 3 or less hours)

I'd also like to run this off a matx or smaller platform, so getting huge O/C's may be a problem. (due to lack of power phases)

Bigadv is simply not feasible for me to run long term, but I can afford to stretch my budget a decent bit now, so something like a 980x build isn't completely out of the question. Although I'd stay away if I could pull off my goal with something like a 1090T/i7 930.

I'd still need to figure out what motherboard to get for a build like this so if you have any ideas on that please fire away.

If you can really afford it, an overclocked 980X or 970 should run standard SMP units in a few hours, excluding larger ones like 6040/6041 and 6701/6702. I don't know if it would be fast enough to finish them in under 3 hours though. That would mean a sub-2 minute frame time, and I don't know if even an overclocked Gulftown can do that.

Not fast enough.

BTW why do you not want bigadv? Is your system is 24hr on?

I don't think it's a good idea price wise... An heavy overclocked 980x will do about 20 000 -25 000 ppd on non bigadv unit Thats a 1000$ processor as you know. If your aiming at fast sended WU.... why not buy 2X GTX 460 for about 200$ each for the same 20 000 ppd! ( But I do understand that you want a M-ATX mobo)

the 460's will fit on a matx, but hes concerned with heat so i guess it wont work out.

You could try to find one of the 'External Exhaust' Evga GTX 460s. The 460s run very cool, and are good for ~10K PPD. I can't seem to find one on NCIX. Maybe some watercooling with an external rad??

If you want WUs done very quickly in the times you suggest, GPU folding is the only sensible solution I can see.

How would that help? The external exhaust cooler is worse than the stock one.
