I finally took the plunge and am running Ubuntu full time on my main (now quad) rig.

I figured I'd get better PPD by not needing to share the cache between two different VMs.

Unfortunately my first WU under Ubuntu (3062) is one of the new fangled quad core ones so I can't compare PPD, and even worse.... FahMon doesn't have it in the database so it's not working for this WU.

I'm currently getting 6Min 20Sec checkpoints which works out to under 11 hours for the WU but it looks like it's only worth 1350 so I'd be lucky to pull 3K PPD out of it and I was getting 2700+ with a single 2605 under VMware.

We'll see how it works out.... maybe the quad core WUs just suck and I'd get better ppd running two VMware instances........ (Gonna throw on another 2 gig of memory as well to see if that makes a difference.... :) ).

My Quads can still pump 4700+ when crunching 2605s with the same setup - Quad + 2 VMs w/Ubuntu. I've been getting a lot of 2609s lately, still worth 1385 points. But I can't say if running Ubuntu as a stand-alone OS will output better numbers than dual VMs. How long are you willing to try it out? Because there is a huge difference between 3K and 4.7K PPDs.

Is there a way in Ubuntu to verify if all 4 cores are active while crunching? That may be the issue.

I'll certainly tough it out long enough to see what I get when I'm given a "dual-core" WU.

All 4 cores are running at around 94% just like it does in VMware (There's a "task manager" style app in Ubuntu that lists performance). The only thing I haven't got set up is some form of hardware monitor for temps, but I'm dual booting so I can see what full load does to the temps under XP.

I just dropped an extra 2 gig of Ballistix PC2 8500 onto the board and am doing at least one full memtest run to make sure that the board plays nicely with 4 sticks at this OC (down to 3.8 for max stability until I can spend a whole weekend finding the sweet spot for this chip).

I finally came to the realization that I'm not interested in spending money on Vista, but want to move on to a 64bit OS to take advantage of cheap memory pricing. The only think keeping me away from Linux has been gaming, and I can drop into XP if I want to do that...... :)

Well I think your new chip will play guinea pig for a while; hey you never know! And is it time to update your sig?

I'm holding off until I get my new vid card in hand and then I'll do a complete sig change rather than incremental.... :)

As it stands... I'm running the q6600 on the Dq6 and the E6420 on the Dark. Still haven't decided if I'm going to keep the 1950pro or find somebody around here who's deserving of a decent deal on a used vid card.

The WC stuff is all gonna have to change as well..... :) (Did I mention how freaking quiet these yate loons are????? :) ).

I'm now starting to wonder if it would make a difference between 3X "pulling" as I'm doing now, or trying 3X "pushing", or going whole hog and going "push/pull" on the 360 rad.

If it'd give me 4 or 5 deg C it would probably be worth it, but I doubt I'd see that much......

On my next customer build, I'm definitely going for the whole kit - push/pull config. Fans are becoming more efficient and quieter too. But why does your whole wc need to change?

I meant in my sig to reflect the new WC build I've been beating on for the last 5 months...... :)

The TT watercooling is long gone.

Oh! I taught you meant changing components again...

So far, things are not looking good for running a single quad core SMP client under native linux. The SMP client doesn't do a good job of using all 4 cores (seems to run about 93% on one of the cores, and around 60% on the other three) but FAH Admin strongly suggests running just the single core in order to do the most work for the "Science"......

Quad core WUs are designed to be short runs (prefered 1 day runs) but the points don't reflect what could be achieved using two VMs under XP.

Not sure what I'm going to do... these guys are obviously bean counters who don't really understand human nature when it comes to trying for the best PPD and are counting on best intentions when it comes to folks not trying to pump up their scores by doing something contrary to "best science".

Even running the monster WU 3060 (2539 points) I'll only get slightly over 3700 PPD while I'd get close to 5000 PPD running two vmware clients.

I'm going to stick with this for a while as I really want to run a 64 bit OS, and keep my fingers crossed that the "often mentioned" revamp of the point system will address the issue.

I don't believe that running multiple instances is against "best science". Au contraire, it allows the user to optimize CPU cycle utilization to its maximum and gives a better WU output, offering the Science Community a wealth of crunched WUs to analyse... Got 4 Cores? Use 4 Cores.

Well, if you wish to stick to a 64bit OS, you could always have Ubuntu 64bit running under VMware (from any Windoze flavor). And by the same token, why not add a second instance of Ubuntu 64bit and FAH? That way, you have best of both worlds. Your 64bit OS (twice), and 2 FAH instances. And since you added 2 more Gbs, it should not lag at all.

Wait, no. Won't work since the base OS (Windoze) has to be 64bit in order to see more than 3Gb of Ram...

Damn.
