Well, the mystery deepens.......

Adjusting the slider does indeed change the processor usage, but it also seems tied to the gpu as PPD dropped like a rock. Maybe something relating to cuda?

It's happened to me before Steve - I re-downloaded the client and it worked fine.

Re: the CPU slider, yes it will limit the % of the CPU core used by the GPU client. Irrelevant for nvidia folding, it's only there for ATI purposes. The FAH_GPU_IDLE environment variable is the only way to scale performance of an nvidia GPU client properly.

Just tried that again, no luck. Still pegging 3 cores at 100%. I'm starting to wonder about cuda drivers......

Hmmm - I've never seen that! Drivers shouldn't matter, but which are you using anyway? And might as well post a fahlog using the code tags in case we can find anything of use.

Currently using 178 drivers.... I've just downloaded the official 186 drivers so we'll see if they make a difference.

178 drivers?!? What? Why the hell....?

Download the 190.38 drivers dude. Download CUDA Code - complete and free toolkit for creating derivative works

They are the most stable ones for folding to date.

Heh... the 178 drivers were the ones that came on the ASUS disk.... after trying the newest offerings and discovering that I was unable to use precision for OC (shaders not available), I thought it was a proprietary driver issue so went with the ASUS drivers.

Installing the 186 drivers resolved the issue. (I thought the 19X.XXX drivers were blowing up people's cards???? ).

I suspect it was probably a Cuda issue more than anything else... seems to me the 18X.XXX drivers were the first ones to come bundled with it.

yup before driver version 179 or 180 nvidia used a ton of CPU power along with the GPU client - use a driver 180 or greater and problem goes bye bye

Those were the 191-195 drivers. Lotta different problems with those with a lotta different hardware. 190.38 on the other hand are all good, which is why they are still the official drivers for the CUDA 2.3 toolkit. I have read that the new 196 WHQL drivers are quite good for folding, but I'm a if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it kinda guy.

Hey I still use the 178.24's with my twin 9800GTX+'s and they are my best performing cards. They might be ancient but they work great...
