Default I7 920 or 2 x 55xx

I planing my bigadv rigs, I will like to have you tough on using a dual 55xx Xeon stock instead of a 920 OC at 4ghz

Dual E5520s, stock: 33min, average
i7 920 3.9GHz (21 x 191): 31min, average

Both will yield similar results, dual 1366 boards can be found for 300 (Newegg.ca - Computer Hardware,Motherboards,Server Motherboards,ASUS,Dual LGA 1366).

I would go with an i7 920. I get about 31-32TPF on bigadvs at 4GHZ. Especially if you are going to use a virtual machine, since its restricted to 8 cores right now. I think tdual Xeon rigs get about 35TPF. Check this thread out:
Folding Forum • View topic - Frame Times on -bigadv Units I think the i7 920 rigs are cheaper to do as well.

If the vmware rigs could see more than 8 cores (ie. two Xeon chips with HT), then it might be better. 3.0Charlie might be the one to talk to.

Thanks for the link.

From what I've seen so far x E5540's when running in native linux will get you sub 27min TPF. Which is nearly impossible for a single i7. Mine @ 4810MHz only gets 27min 30sec.

Now THIS is impressive

RAM installed: 20GB

Too bad that thing is outrageously priced. You could likely build 4 i7's and it would still be cheaper and yield more PPD.

Yes, most will do 4.0.

FYI, I'm contemplating buying a W3570 for shits and giggles, and I may have a 920 C0 available shortly (the same one that did 3.9 with the Noctua D14 on my Rampage II Gene). It'll go for dirt-cheap.

Most D0's will have no problem doing 4GHz on air.

Rich ones anyways You are always going to be multiplier limited when overclocking w/ the lower cost Xeons.
