My System Specs

Default Two folding machines

All,
I've installed F@H onto my laptop (see signature). I've installed two instances of F@H console in separate folders and each console was assigned a unique CPUID (2 and 3) when being configured.

F@H is installed on my main PC without any configuration performed; I assume it defaults to CPUID 0 or 1.

Have I done this right?

Kind regards

When you say cpu id i assume you mean machineid which it the parameter used by the client and is stored in client.cfg. Machineid does not create an affinity in the os to one of the cores - it just makes each instance unique.

Any value from 1-8 can be used in the v 5.04 client. The default is 1. If you put in a value outside of 1-8, the client will default to 1 and update the client.cfg to reflect that.

2 and 3 are fine on your dual core merom. It doesn't matter what you use as long as both instances on 1 rig are different from each other and between 1 and 8.

On your other rig with one instance, if you look in client.cfg or run the client with -configonly switch, you will see that machineid=1 is set.

So the answer to your question is yes, you have done it right.

Be careful that you don't use an editor like wordpad to touch the client.cfg file since it will corrupt it and the next time the client starts it will write a default client.cfg which will have team=0 and username=0.
Notepad will work but doesn't display it properly since it is a unix format file and does not use CRLF at the end of each line like windows apps expect.
A free app like noteTAB or metatab works properly. I use notetab as my default editor.
Stanford does not recommend using editors on it ... use the -config or -configonly switches to change settings with the client unless you really know what you are doing with it.

Pete

Default 1+1=2

Nice job AMON. How do you find the 8600GT GO performs?

Id like to join the F@H although im not sure that my system will make much of a dint in your teams scores though.

I only have few hours a day I could devote to this but that will change when i upgrade.

oops i just reread your post ... on your main rig you should configure the client so you will fold for team=54196 and username=Amon_Anon ? (or whatever folding id you are going to use) If you don't set these values before you complete a wu, you will be folding under the anonymous/default userid on the anonymous/default team!

With the standard client, you should also configure it to accept big packets unless you are on dial up since it will let your client get wu's with bonus points if they are available.

also, that main rig might be a candidate for the smp client instead which potentially will produce a lot more points. How much cache does that cpu have and is it running oc'ed?

To reconfigure the client, stop it with ctrl-c. Then run the it with -configonly parameter on the command line - this is easiest to do by just setting up a shortcut to it and adding ' -configonly' to the end of the target string under shortcut properties. Or type it all in if you like to type. With a shortcut you can reuse it later.

I assumed in my answers that you used the v 5.04 text only client ... and that you didn't configure it to run as a service?

I've got both my young lad's A64 (3500+) and my daughter's S754 Sempron 3100+ pumping out points for the team (daughter's is under my name, son's is kjwilson). I'd guess that an OC'd dual core opty 165 would probably be pumping out at least 500 PPD which is nothing to sneeze at.

Default yes the more the merrier

sorry to rudely digress AMON...

ok ill give it a go but i only have a few hours a day i can use this machine for folding as my work often needs a lot of this things power.

anyway ill have my brothers qextreme working for you come october when hes on leave from C.Bastion.

leave it on 724 ... you don't work on it around the clock do you?
If you find that it gets it folding time in then we can help you switch to the smp client which will produce lots more points.

BTW, the folding client will not consume cycles when you are using the rig for other things ... it runs at idle priority. It will take up some memory.

Most folders leave it running even on gaming rigs.

Default right then

Ok consider me in.

Just give me a few more days to set it up and get a feel for it.

Seems a shame the NvideaGPU cant make a contribution, it helps with computations in R...well graphics anyway

Ill dig up my 3200athlon system too.

Even if the gpu could fold, your rig would probably produce more running smp and would consume less power and produce less heat doing it. Also, gpu folding does interfere with any serious video usage.

And it runs crazy hot!!!!!!

I ran it for a while, but I found that it pretty well ran the vid card 100% full load 24/7 and still ate up some cpu cycles at the same time.

The SMP beta otoh I find runs probably around a 80% load (based on temperature difference between orthos and SMP beta) so it's not stressing the components quite as much, although I suspect it's putting the memory through just as much work as it does the CPU.
