get two cheap 50-60 dollar 8800gt's and oc the shaders till hell and back..the cards that i picked up from mack had shaders above 700mhz and were doing a clean 6.2k ppd each. and thats a gt, not a gtx etc.

poor bm 260's was pushing 7-8k on the same wu...maybe he can drop in a piccie of my screenshot as i dont know where i put them..so shader clock is everything or better said very important.

That's true. I have one in particular that I've seem sit right on 8k PPD for best part of an hour (or most of a whole work unit) and not bat an eye at it.
That screen shot would come in handly. Might even be able to find mine but it'll take a while LOL.

Here ya go. Fairly typical of an average day, maybe a lil bit higher.

I hate noise every bit as much as you do bro, but believe me, EVGA's 260's are like church mice. Never hear 'em tiptoeing through the tulips LOL.

Kill-A-Watt meter showing 1263 watts right now with true RMS 120 input and TRMS output.
So it ain't exactly cheap, but I know the big-time guns shell out a lot more than that unless
they have solar heating and electricity, damn popular down here in southern california.

I'd say 8800GT's, possibly with a cooler. Accelero S1 or Coolink GFXChilla (very quiet, VERY cool).

we share the same opinion. uber cheap, you will need a custom cooler anyway. the only thing is that power consumption will shoot up vs one 260

I can vouch for the Accelero cooler. I have two of them in the closet now, left overs from my X1900 days. Excellent cooler and zero noise.

Power consumption isn't that bad anyways, might need a 550/600w compared to a 500w for a 260 but you'll get a fair bit more PPD (at least 60% more I would think).

hmm..what i do is the following. i look up the power consumption of the vcard, here : The Truth About Graphics Power Requirements V2 - Graphic Hardware - Forums - www.atomicmpc.com.au

make sure to bookmark it. then look at the specs that one usually trusts on corsair, antec,ocz...load your unit up 80% and youll be fine, even in the longrun. if you want to spare a bit more cash and go for a higher wattage unit(less noise since it has less load and less power consumption at 50% vs at 80% on a lower wattage unit wich in itself itll pay for itself in the long run) and thats that.

i for one hate noise..i used to be into clocking and loud fans..not anymore.
