but then 260's will come down in price. say you snatch 3 for 100-120 each...hmmmm....
$70 per card for 4 8800GTs comes out to $280 for the cards, plus ~$350 for the motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Total PPD from a machine like that would be about 25k PPD assuming you go with a half-decent quad-core CPU and run the Linux SMP client on it. Plus, you would need a fairly hefty PSU, so let's say $150 for that. Total system cost: ~$750-800. Total PPD: up to about 25k.

Now let's think about an i7 system. ~$250 for the CPU, ~$200 for the motherboard, ~$50 for a good heatsink and fan, ~$50 for a 9600GSO, $200 for 6GB of DDR3, and $75-100 for a good 500-750W PSU. Total cost: ~$800-850. Total PPD: about 25-26k.

The overall cost is about the same both ways. However, there are a number of advantages to the i7 system, such as the ability to add more GPUs in the future and lower power consumption. Plus the i7 is better as a general-purpose computing machine, since it's much more powerful than the AMD system would be.

Two things I don't like about his build:
1) 8347's are BA stepping, hence TLB errata, hence folding probably won't work out so well for him
2) I frown in the general direction of his passive heatsinks. Those 8347's have the same TDP as a Q6600. Could you imagine putting a 1U passive heatsink on a Q6600? No thanks!

But a noble endeavour indeed, and I certainly wish him the best. Tell him he only needs to plug in the 4-pin ATX cable if he's using quad-rank ECC RAM - so if he's not, then he'd be better off getting a 4pin-8pin adapter than a molex-8pin adapter for the second CPU pair.

I too will be going with an ultra-ghetto homemade test bench for my build. Parts are starting to trickle in now (just got the CPUs this morning!) so expect to see some progress reports show up in the Worklogs section probably tomorrow evening.
He's having the same issue with the daughterboard. I don't know if he'll even end up going with it. It would probably be more cost-effective to just buy a second motherboard.

1) With the TLB fix, hopefully the performance drop won't be too bad. It should still be fast enough to finish -bigadv workunits within the deadline.
2) I seriously doubt he plans on using them passively. Right now he's just trying to get the system up and running, and I think he needs to get some new backplates for the heatsinks before he can do that.

I'll pass on the comments about the power cables.

I have no idea...........
It's obviously such a closely guarded secret that they ain't talking with ANYONE out of house about it and the LAST
person on earth I'd ever listen to is one who is (or claims to me) because chances are he/she ain't employed there any more LOL.

Chances are they all do above a certain version number. In most cases where the difference in the number of files installed alone isn't a dead giveaway, the diference will be just a few bytes of code in a "jump table" in one of the vendor supplied DLL files that routes around the code or just bypasses it based on just one ot two other simple detection results.
