Question Folding on 5870?

Does anyone have any idea how well the 5870 performs in folding @home? I'm going to get one when the availability levels out. I am new to folding....I assume there's some sort of folding client. Does it support the 5870? Will the client need to be updated to use OpenCL instead of ATi Stream?

AFAIK it supports it, unsure about how many ppd it'll put out. Likely nvidia will still be better for folding.

Here is a quote from an AMD developer over at the folding forums:
Quote:
On really large proteins you will see some speedup, but the current core is essentially still running in "6XX mode". On the small proteins, you will see minimal speedup, on massive proteins, much larger than currently going out public, we have seen 50% increases. Still not as much as we would like to see and we think we will be able to get down the road.
Some additional info here: Folding Forum • View topic - Is PG getting ready for R8xx? [Yes]

Another quote from a Pande group developer:
Quote:
It means the software isn't even attempting to make use of the new hardware yet. The software engineer that will be working on OpenCL told me he only started working on it a few days ago. It will be a while before it's all done and tested.
Looks like some time before ATI and Stanford can get things together for this card to catch up to nVidia and Cuda.

Ugh. Here is a screenshot from Rage3D's review for an indication:

I have a $120 card here that puts out about ~1500PPD more than this card at the moment.

Like the earlier ATI series, a great gaming card, total crap folding ATM. There is hope in the future with DirectConpute/Open_CL with this card, but thats some terrible PPD for a $400 card in my universe.

Thanks guys! I will probably still get that card as it is primarily for gaming. Let's just hope with DirectCompute and OpenCL that the performance improves.

People over on the Folding Forum were saying how ATI folding doesn't use all the shader units. I expect the PPD to go up. However, how long would ATI folders have to wait for their PPD to go up?
