Default PS3 is a powerhouse!

It's done 5.5 WU's to my PC's one +1/3. I'll see how the PC does once I switch to the SMP client.

Yup, that's the CBE and processor for you. I suspect this will improve sales of the console, strangely.

I would believe that with the recent price drop, the PS3 at its $549 asking price will pretty much walk all over a similarly-priced folding PC system.

Ya it kinda sucks this hasn't been crunchin' the passed couple days. in-laws have been over (babysitting) so if I had it on folding they wouldn't know how to get out of it to watch a movie.

ps3's are great folders.

But if i were looking at a dedicated folding platform, a minimalist oc'ed c2d/c2q is going to be a better platform in terms of point production and power to operate 724 and could be cheaper if built with a c2d.

good point pscout. anyone with a PS3 care to measure the power consumption in watts while the unit is folding?

never mind, i found this faq, 200W (if accurate). Prolly about the same as a PC if an ATI vid card is crunching WU's as well. <?>

By comparison, my quads that run ~ 3ghz at < 1.4V consume about 200W folding smp (~ 100% load). They produce 2800-4000 ppd depending on wu's/os vs the ps3 which is benchmarked at 900 ppd. A minimalist quad rig for folding can be built at current prices for ~ $650 before tax/shipping which may vary.

You're welcome.

One other bit of info on the ps3 I just got from a folding buddy is that the ps3 when folding consumes 225-240 watts (it will be running higher utilization most likely when folding than when gaming, etc), so it will be higher than a quad unless you are feeding the quad >> 1.4 volts.
