Default Folded my 9800GX2 half to death! Literally!!

Just want to confirm what I fear I already know...so here it goes:

Ok, so my rig with the 2 9800GX2's has been crunching away happily for quite some time now putting up some decent PPD. This morning I go down to use the computer and I can hear that it's whooshing away as usual, folding protiens. The monitor is in it's usual standby mode, so I wiggle the mouse to wake it up. Strange...no response. Some more wiggles and then some key mashing to help it along....nada. Hmmm...what's up with this thing?

I proceed to reset the computer figuring it's hung or something. To my dismay, no post and just some beeping noises from the computer and no signal message from the monitor. I reset afew times, clear the CMOS and try...nothing. Then I notice that the blue LED that indicates a video signal isn't lit, jut the other green one is on. Now I know somethin's up. Shut down, yank the card (nearly burn my hands; ever play hot potato with a scorching 9800GX2? These things are serious heaters), clean it off with some compressed air. I let it cool down and reinstall it alone, without the other GX2. Same thing...not post, no Blue LED, just some R2D2 noises.

Yank it again, install the other GX2 in primary slot and problem GX2 in secondary. Post's just fine, boots into Vista, all looks well. Start folding to test, all is well, except the 4th GPU client gives me the "your hardware isn't presently supported" message. Check Nvidia control panel...yup..only show's 3 monitors instead of the usual 4. Check device manager...yup...only showing 3 listings for a 9800GX2 instead of 4.

So...as far as I can tell, the card is half toast right? I decided to continue folding on the remaining core because....well just because it's still working and I need the PPD. Just thought I'd post up just incase someone has a fix in mind...long shot, but figured I'd bring ya'll up to speed in the process. Can't RMA it as I'm the second owner of this EVGA former beauty, so I guess I'm SOL. Just wanted to apologize to the team as my PPD is going to take a nice hit.

Like I said...folded the damn thing half to death. Ironically, as crazy as I am about the IC Diamond TIM, it's the only card I never got around to putting it on (I put that stuff on everything, even redid my Xbox with it...sometimes I even tuck it into bed next to me ) and this GX2 always ran hotter than the other one so I may have cooked it pretty good. That Thermaltake Armour gets soooo hot I can't tell you, and the den is an oven, so it looks like I may have officially cooked my first ever GPU!

And for all those that aren't folding for 54196...I'd do it all over again!!!

Mom would be so proud.

Oh no... that sucks!
I've been worrying a little about my rig lately, and this kind of thing doesn't help.
At least it died doing something noble and not while watching p0rn...

How many other ppl have killed hardware folding?
We should have a Hardware R.I.P sticky thread to pay tribute to all hardware that has died while folding.

Have you tried to bake your card to see if it can help resurrect it, you never know, it may somehow bring it back to life. Still sorry to hear about it, hopefully you'll be able to get a replacement or bake it

The GX2s are the only hardware I've seen much comment about crapping out from folding. They put out great PPD, but that's a hell of a lot of heat in an enclosed space. Any chance it's still under warranty?

Thanks for the condolences. I know the guy I bought it from had it registered with EVGA. I've sent him a message, but no reply thus far. For anyone that's never folded with the GX2's, it will redefine your understanding of a hot graphics card! PPD is amazing, but man you can cook food on the cards with how hot they get. Alas, if the guy doesn't get back to me, I will try the baking method maybe after I figure out what I'm going to do for my setup. The other core is still crunching away happily, so I'll take what I can get for now.

The dead one did die doing something noble, so I'll chalk this up to the trials and tribulations of folding. Who says folders don't have battlescars? I literally have mild burns on my hands from yanking and handling the card...stupid, but I had to know if it was okay and couldn't wait. I think anyone that's hooked will eventually lose a loved piece of hardware to the addiction that is folding, so I'm sad that it's dead, but happy for what it died for.

Long live GPU4! You will be sorely missed :(

Ouch man. I fold with my GX2, but the only reason it's still alive is because it's WC'd. I'm never taking this guy off of water!

You know Jackquelegs, I was thinking about that today. My GX2's get ludicrously hot and throw out amazing amount of heat. I've been punishing them 100% for months on end and I'm actually kinda surprised only 1 GPU has died. It's a testament to the chip makers that these things can take the kind of abuse I've been putting them through and still keep chugging along without rest. I don't think I'll be replacing the GX2 with another, unless I get a crazy good deal on one. Next dual GPU Nvidia card for me will be the 295 or whatever comes after and I will be watercooling them....unless the ATI cards finally start putting up the PPD we've been promised for so long. For me, I game and HTPC with ATI and strictly fold with Nvidia. Seems to have been working out fine so far.

I had that happen to me, although it was the primary(first) core and as a result the whole thing didnt show up as functioning. Happened to me while runing 2 gx2's as well, so far 4 gx2's have been running untouched for a month and a half.... Very toasty though :) Maybe we can make 1 functioning gx2 out of our 2 broken ones :) I havent tried the baking yet.

Sorry to hear you've lost a GPU as well. So, just to double check 4Door, the GPU that died on your card is the one on the side with only the DVI port? My dead one seems to be the one on the side that handle's primary display and has the DVI and HDMI ports. Do you know if all the reference designed GX2's can have their parts interchanged with one another? Or do they code it or something based on the reseller? I'd love to give it a go and see if I can't Frankenstein two cards together...if you're willing to part with it that is.

It died a while ago.... been sitting ever since... Actually now that I think about it I'm not sure what/if just 1/2 died. It was in my first PCI-E slot and I just swaped in the other gx2... But I do remember the blue light not coming on. Puter booted up with it in the second PCI-E but I dont remember if it was recognized at all. Currently without a spare mobo to test it.

Its an EVGA as well and no dice on the repair since I'm not the original owner and the serial was already reg'd by someone else.
