I dunno what the big deal is. I personally fold because I HOPE that whatever results these guys get to lead to advances in medicine, and cures for various diseases. Maybe even cancer. But who knows? At this point, I forgot who said it but I agree that not a whole lot of advancements have been made.

But then I just think that we haven't folded the exact right protein yet, or that proteins aren't being folded fast enough b/c of people with P.O.S. Pentium 2 or 3 computers, trying to fold.

Personally, I think that the more people we get folding (willingly or not) the better outcome it will have for mankind. The sooner we can fold all these proteins is the sooner we will have all the raw data, and finally, the sooner we can start developing better medicines based on this data. Get this thing over with already! I wanna see some innovation, and I want to see some NOW. Let these F-T-L guys fold, even if it's not willingly or w/e. Ethics? Bah, it's an online points tabulator just used for the sake of competition, not a friggin' court of law! There is no shame to folding if you fold, no matter how you fold. It's all toward a good cause, even if you're just in it to get bragging rights for points.

The problem with that is that you are stating that the ends justify the means. Yes its true the more people contributing the better it is... however the major problem everyone has is that these people are unaware that they are contributing. F@H is on their computer like a virus, (this means possible damage to their computers, higher electricity bills, etc... all without their knowledge or "consent")

Exactly, which could lead to anti-virus and anti spyware programs flagging Folding@Home. That or bloggers blow it out of proportion like they do most things. If it becomes enough of an issue, I could see this happening and it would really put F@H in a bad light.

Yep.

It's extremely important from a marketing standpoint , that folding is not associated with anything 'malwarish'.....

And I gotta say :

It bugs the piss outta me that a lot of the top teams etc , aren't all over this.

This isn't a troll you can can ignore. This sh!t has gotta stop.....

Ignoring this makes you complicit , and that makes this kinda thing ok....If that's the case , we'll have a race to see who can snake an installer into microsoft first.

Makes me wanna vomit.

I doubt setting the team's points to always be the lowest number the stat server can give will do anything that behaviour.
I'm thinking FAH will have to begin forcing a username + pass combo like a lot of the BOINC based projects use, or at the very least, not allow "Anonymous" folders anymore. This should allow them to really stop sending WUs to the fraudulent user names. I almost suggested to have the user re-authenticate for different machines, but you're treading into SecuROM / WGA territory there.

I can assume some people will be ignorant enough to sign up for FAH because they think it will get their cracked game working, but if you follow a cracker's instructions that blindly, you'll already have bigger problems than extra CPU usage.

+1 to that. I think if a user doesn't understand it enough to get a user name and password they probably did not take the time to understand what F@H is or the implications of running it on their computer or ps3.

Team F-T-L has been neutered.

There's been no statement on the folding forums yet , but they are busy crunching away for zero points a day......

Do you have some inside information or something?

The "zero points / day" is what it looks like on the EOC chart, but that takes on a whole new meaning when you realise that the points are actually above the zero point and that the top block is 0 - 5 million. By that chart, and their -475K PPD they're still putting out around 1 million PPD.
