@Prof. Dr. Silver - you got an 8600GT currently folding? I got one of those too! Just curious, but what kind of PPD do you get with that?
I think it does 1350PPD on an 1888WU. It is not much but it helps the cause! I'll check the benchies for you when I get home from work :)

@chriskwarren:

TY for the input. Would it be worth it to get a 768MB? Would it make a difference in PPD at all? Especially thanks for the links to the folding charts!

EDIT: According to the charts the 8800GS 384MB overtakes the 9600GT for folding, but the 9600GT out-folds the 9600GSO...strange...

@Prof. Dr. Silver:

Would you? That would be sweet! I might end up keeping this 8600GT instead of selling it and getting a GSO by itself, but I'll make a more educated guess when I got the hard numbers. Thanks in advance! =D

Memory size does not make much/any difference right now. I am not sure what happens if the WUs get bigger. If the price difference is small, then get the 768MB version. If the price difference is huge, then get the 384MB. I would pay extra for the 384MB compared to the 512MB though.

Actually an XFX 768MB is $72 after $20 MIR at (who'd have guessed?) TigerDirect, and $77 at Newegg, and its more expensive for a 384MB. IF the 9600GT does indeed fold more than the 9600GSO I'd rather buy that Palit one from here for $70 - Getting it $2 cheaper for a little bit more! Damn, I really wish I could get an 8800GS, even if it's used.

All right, here it is! We would need some ppl to verify these results though, because I find it kinda weird that it does better than my 9800GX2 and 8800GTS 640Mb. The 8600GT runs at 620c/850m/1507s and hovers around 55C while folding a 768 points WU. Here are the numbers:

353 = 5545
472 = 5437
= 3872
768 = 5026
1888 = 4943

You know what.... this is too weird for words... we need more results. I'm kinda thinking FahMon messed up the results.... but if I look at all the benchmarks, that is what is shows. Let me grab a screenie...

Here.... see?

I bought 2 XFX 9600GSO's from TigerDirect, and here are my results/observations:

- They score 3,350ppds each on the 1,888point WU's with core at stock (580mhz) and shaders at 1,800mhz (1,782 effective) using nVidia 185 drivers.

- Underclocking the core speed DOES affect ppd rates, contrary to popular belief. I lost 350ppds when setting the core speed at 500mhz (wanted to see if I would get a noticeable drop in temps)

- They are LOUD on stock cooling - however, AC Cooling Accelero S1 rev.1's and rev.2's both fit the cards perfectly, and you can run them passively if you have decent cooling / air moving through the case.

In my cramped Antec 300, the 2 front fans keep my 9600GSO's running at 45deg.C. for 24/7 folding.

FYI

@Prof. Dr. Silver:

That is strange. Perhaps there is something wrong with your 9800GX2/8800GTS 640MB? My 8800GT runs at approximately the same speeds give/take a few MHZ, although I'm not sure about it getting 5K PPD. I'll do more research and see if I can dig up a situation similar to yours, but as you said I will definitely need more than one result. Major thanks for the input! =D

@Synth:

Those 9600GSO's... Is it 3,350PPD each, or is it total? I don't care about noise or anything (even temps), but I don't want it hitting 100C, stock-clocked or over-clocked. Once again, major thanks for the input! =D

Damn Prof...if thats the case you got yourself a Sweet 8600GT....
Maybe its really a Rebadged 9800GT

If thats the case, I wouldn't complain, thats decent numbers for sure, and near the same clocks as my EVGA 9800GT.

Regards,
ST

Wick-ick-ed! Doing some more research the avg. PPD of an 8600GT is ranging form 1500 to 2000, so it's not a bad folder, but it's not the best. The 8400GS is the way to go, out of all the low-end cards. I'm gonna sell my 8600GT so I can snag one of those 8400gs' in the Buy&Sell thread. I wonder if anyone would even be interested though...damn
