My System Specs

Default Anyone Have Numbers on the 4890 Yet?

I'm curious if its got a PPD increase from the 4870 etc...

Or what it would get at 1GhZ with it being overclocked.

Regards,
ST

bit-tech.net | Review - Radeon HD 4890 vs GeForce GTX 275

Dismal as per usual for ATI. 3781ppd is so sad out of a ~$300 card and the power consumption while folding on that card is rediculously high compared to all other cards in it's price point while folding. Sad how a Nvidia $59 card gets almost 200ppd more. My sincerest condolences goes out to all ATI folders.

Yeah, it is pretty pathetic when you consider that the 8800GTS cards get around 5K PPD.

Say what you want about CUDA, but at least Nvidia is out there showing what it can do.

Wow...that is....so sad...

Thanks for the heads up on that though.
So..no ATI Folding then for me it would seem.

OK, I'm new to this folding thing and I've got my 4890 to replace my 4850 512mb. I have no idea of the folding perf of the 4850 and upgraded to a 4890 without having folding perf in mind. In fact, I've decided to fold after the upgrade.

FahMon is showing my 4890 as folding 3385 PPD. This is a Powercolor 4890 1GB stock.

The more you overclock it the more ppd you will get. Different WU's will give different PPD's, so don't be surprised if it vary's.

Just make sure it has lots of airflow, Folding seems to stress parts of the card that aren't allway's reflected in the sensor showing a higher temp reading.

If you have any questions create a different thread and ask, we'll be glad to help.

Welcome to our Addiction...

F@H was a major reason I went to the nVidia camp. I was warned prior that the ATIs will catch up (bigger WUs, better optimization), but that was November, and it has not happened yet...

Not at all has it happened...my HIS 2900XT has been getting the same points from the day I got it, on release day. Funny too, becuase I had a newer version 2900XT, with the better cooler, die on me in a few months(only to be replaced with an ES with extra ram voltage), while the HIS card has been going strong pretty much 24/7 @ 80c++.

Anyway, I get less than double the points of a 2900xt w/ a 4870, and there's more than double the shaders on the 4870. While I understand there are certain limitations, there's got to be some cycles hiding there, nevermind that load temps aren't that high either...to the point that they are 30c less than GRiD. I'm sure power consumption may match this as well...

There's a couple of possible issues at play here. When ATI first started supporting FAH, there were quite a few deaths of cards...nothing drastic, but more than would be the norm for normal use IMHO, and I personally raised a stink about it, so they may have taken this into consideration...I lost 2x X1900XTX, 1x1800XL, and X1950XTX, all were RMA'ed without issue though.

Also, FAH is still run by a university, which receives a good portion of it's operating expenses for programs like this from donations. It's just simply seems possible to me that nVidia is the main donator, and as such, has commended more attention from the FAH programmers...which is only fair.

Add in that CUDA seems to have more support than CTM. Why or how, I dunno, but that's not my concern anyway.

Knowing that AMD is a bit tight on funds, I don't blame them for almost completely ignoring FAH.
