I thought LCD reads CPU temp...I checked it one time and it was right in line, reading 46C off the CPU while the IHS was 40C...But those were the good old days. Damn. Can I at least finish my WU's? theyre at about 90% with a 15min avg. time per interval, 150 minutes is 2.5 hours, will I kill my i7? Or no?

Holy smoke so much heat for friggin' 600MHZ, I mean jeez, it was only at about 70C before...

I've had great success with this. Thanks for sharing!

It boosted the output of my Q6600 considerably. Not sure if anyone mentioned, but the latest FahMon fixes that 'hanging' client issue. There is now a 'This is a Virtual Machine' option when adding clients in version 2.3.99.1.

Neat! I'll have to try it and update the guide!

Would this work on my dual-core laptop if I run only 1 VM instead of 2 FAH sessions like I am now?

Can I expect a boost in performance from 1 SMP Linux VM vs. 2 FAH sessions?

Laptop specs:

AMD QL-60 @2.0GHZ
ATI HD 3200 - The S**tiest GPU I've ever had the displeasure of working with
3GB DDR2-800
250G HDD

As long as your CPu supports virtualization then it will work. You will also get higher PPD than the windows SMP client, and you should only run one VM.

My only concern is that laptops have a little more difficulty with cooling than a desktop, so you would have to be careful doing a lot of folding on a laptop. Folding will put lots of stress on the laptop's cpu, and generate lost of heat. Personally, I don't do folding on my laptop.

Uh....you have a guide?

I fold on my Acer Aspire 5601. I run one single core client and it makes my temps stay in the acceptable range. I believe it tops out at around 60C to 65C.

Cool, so I FINALLY got my VM working after a few hours because there was an F-up with DNS or something. Basically the wireless on my lappy was connecting to the wrong network for some reason, but when I got it connected to my home network the DNS thing didn't come up any more and now it's all good. But not quite.

Yeah, so I'm using the "fold64" option on this VM (Proc is 64-bit, who knew?) and it's using 2/2 physical cores on this CPU, and of course utilizing the A2 core. But then instead of being GROVCS (which I think it should be - more efficient than the other one), it's using GROMACS, which is like lol wut? Plus, the WU it DL'ed is only 149pts! WTF?

So, I have a few questions:

1) I set the WU size to "big" on the config page, why did it DL a tiny one?
2) How can I stop it working on this small WU and start working on a big WU?
3) Is using 1 SMP VM more efficient than using 2 straight-up FAH console clients?
4) Is GROVCS better than GROMACS? Is it the proper one for my laptop?
5) If GROVCS is better and if it's right for me, how can I set the VM to use it?

I followed the EVGA guide and it wasn't using the CPU 100%. Back to Windows folding for me.

1)Sounds like you didn't add the -smp flag during setup, it should switch to a SMP WU after it's completed the present one.

2) Just let it finish this one.

3)Any SMP is more efficient then two regular console clients especially the VM version.

4)GROVACS is better then the window's GROMACS since it uses the A2 core.

5) The linux/A2 core recieves both, it's luck of the draw which you get sent...

Ah, I see. OK! So after completing not 1, but about 5 puny little GROMACS WU's, it started DLing GROVACS and its using SMP and its using A2 and it's working on a giant 1920pt WU right now, I think this is its second one. It seemed to have fixed itself! Wicked! TY!
