I Fold / Crunch, and for a reason.

I understand the concept of Global Warming, the power usage required while our rigs Fold / Crunch. I believe that in the Grand Scheme of Things, our power usage and effect on Global Warming are relatively small. But there is a limit about building rigs for Folding. What this gentleman is building will be awesome power-wise, but I find this a tad too much...

I forgot to mention, finally, a rig that can run Crysis.

Damn, that is some rig.

What I like are his target specs:

Total computing power target:
  • 19 nVidia GTX295 at 1.788 TeraFLOPS each for 33.972 TeraFLOPS total (38 individual GPUs, two per board)
  • 5 Quad Core processors at ~247.2 GigaFLOPS
Total Computing Power: 34.219 TeraFLOPS

You realize that if that was his average power, 34.219 TFlops, he would be at #77 on the top 500 supercomputer list. That is just awesome if you ask me.

Meh the environment , blah blah blah.

If this guy want's to run that rig for folding , and pay the electricity bill , it's fine with me.Good on him.

At least he's doing something with it.

There are thousands of more important 'wastes-of-energy' to gripe about.....

How about everyone with a car older than 1990....or people who own 3 cars .....or people that run thier AC when they are not even home , or people who own any kind of 'recreational vehicle'....etc,etc,etc,etc......

How about the internet ? how's that not a waste ? it's 50% entertainment ....well boys and girls , all those servers use electricity....

It's a damn good thing David Suzuki has every Canadian shaking in his boots about using less energy as he jets around Canada.....hypocrite......I'll worry about saving 150 watts on lightbulbs when I see that guy biking his shit all over Canada.

If yah wanna wag your finger at someone , make damn sure your pointing it in the right direction.Point it at yourself first , then worry about government and big business.....

Some people go way too far with Folding IMO. Especially considering how much electricity in the States come from coal-fired plants.

I agree. King of the Nerds is not a very lofty aspiration.

Personally, I don't give a hoot about this Global Warming stuff. What I DO care about is the amount of cancer cases, respiratory conditions and general health issues caused by the byproducts of coal and natural gas power plants.

I have made the choice to donate about $100 per month to a local cancer research foundation rather that have that increase on my electrical bill through folding.

There isn't anything wrong with Folding per se but I would rather donate to charity.

I think your way of helping out cancer research is far better than any other means.
