How about a 8800GTX for $100Can? Would that be a wise purchase?

Would I be further ahead with a 8800 GTX @ $100.00 or a 9800 GTX @ $180.00?
Just this week I got 2x EVGA 9800GTX+ for just under $400 shipped at DirectCanada. Check they might still have that price.

Turns out I was lead to dissapointment.

The 8800 GTX I was considering turned out to be a 8800GTS 512meg. I was going to go ahead with it to make a partner for my Current 8800GTS 512Meg. However, due to the confusion with the poster misrepresenting a GTS as a GTX I asked him to confirm it was a 512meg card, turned out to be a 640meg card. I guess for $100.00 its still a good price but I certainly have trust issues now. May end up reciving a totally different card in the mail. Poster does not seem to know what he has. Plus the 640m card is a much lower performer than the GTS 512.

Wouldn't the new GTX 580 or 590 cards be the fastest? Can someone explain why the older 9800GX2 are faster?

I was wondering the same thing. It must be a cost/PPD thing.

Presently the GX2 is kinda cheap, can be had for 70-80$. It does around 11kPPD but outputs an excessive amount of heat. I have seen some recent numbers for GT430, I think Zodac from OCN had some results, and some averages too, but I seen it can go as high as 8k ppd. GTS450 also does a lot even with new units. some results here [MPC] GT 430 - Folding Results - PPD/Power Usage
GT430 can be found also in pciex16 and simple pci guise at around 55$ on tigerdirect. Most of them are single slot and some are low profile too.
