does the 285 make a high pitched whining noise when it folds?

Hell yes. I actually have to leave the room when it is folding.

SKY did you crack that 285 open when you did the review? I've looked everywhere to see the guts of a 285, 295 and the supposed culprit of all this whining sound from the Nvidia cards when under real strenuous load in games and folding. I'm currently RMA'ing my 260 because all this squealing noise is driving me insane. This article Nvidia’s “deadly” flaw and how to fix it - no more GTX280 squealing! Theo’s Bright Side Of IT illustrates the problem and solution but I'm reticent to start spreading nail polish all over my new card so I'm taking a chance a new one might not squeal. I'm rather shocked that the newest NVIDIA card haven't upgraded the power components on their newest lineup seeing EVGA has rectified this awhile ago. Is there any way you can confirm that the 285/295 are still using unsheilded caps/chokes and have bare coils?

I feel your pain though SKY, I have to leave my computer room and shut the door while it's folding. I really wish I had a good mic to record this because it would definately give the old fingernails on a blackboard sound a run for it's money.

Other than some creap custom designs of ATI cards from Sapphire and Palit, I have yet to see an Nvidia reference card using copper coil chokes.

Have you tried Folding with the GTX 295 and the new drivers yet, I know you are short of time but was wondering if the new WHQL's worked. If not there is a solution for the Vista64 problem posted by user p2501 in the F@H forums if you want it...

I am now folding with my GTX285, I am not able to gat the shader clocks you are getting. I am just starting to play with it in EVGA Precision now. The one thing I an attest to is I do not have any squeling. Mine is as quiet as a church mouse. My temps sit at 74 deg with fans at 50 percent. I am sitting on stock clocks right now and I am still playing. I will post PPD later after I experiment a bit. I am hitting between 7500-9000 though depending on WU.

So obviously shaders are the best to max out and doing so means a drop in Core right? What about memory, I see SKYMTL OCd his, it that the best route or does memory make a diff.

No, he dropped the core for power saving I would think. Shaders = PPD, mem and core clocks are minuscule for FAH performance.

I just did some preliminary tests and it seems the memory clocks do make a diff on this card. I dropped my core and memory down as low as they wold go and went from 8200ppd on a 384WU down to 7600ppd, then I bumped my core back up to 650 and put my memory OC up to 1350 with shaders at 1650 and I am now getting 8730ppd. Thats over 1000ppd diff.

More tweaking to follow.
