CES 2017: Netgear Shows Off Nighthawk S8000 Gaming Switch

by MAC     |     January 8, 2017

Netgear have unveiled a gaming-oriented network switch that features some serious capabilities.

With the introduction of super-routers like the Nighthawk X10, Netgear has been really flexing their muscle in the consumer-oriented networking realm. That doesn’t seem likely to slow down with their first Nighthawk-branded gigabit switch. The new Nighthawk S8000 is a semi-managed switch that offers eight LAN ports and a sleek graphical user interface that can managed from the web. Netgear are marketing this switch to those who want to improve their 4K media streaming, achieving low latencies for gaming, or who just want to be able to manage a multi-user home network environment.

With a wedge-like shape that is very reminiscent of the old Lockheed F-117 stealth fighter – codename Nighthawk, obviously – the new S8000 is without question the coolest looking switch that we have ever seen. And it will also be cool to the touch, since dark matte housing is made of a zinc alloy. While it’s unique shape will prevent it from being stackable, the eight ports are likely to more than sufficient for most home users.

This is a layer 2 switch, so it able to offload some of the more resource-intensive tasks from the router, and it can handle duties like IGMP snooping, Quality of Service (QoS), denial of service attacks (DoS) protection, and traffic prioritization.

The absolute coolest feature – which is rarely seen in the consumer space – is support for
link aggregation, also known as port trunking. Basically, it can combine four ports together to form a single 4Gbps connection. Obviously, the device you are connecting to also has to support link aggregation, but more and more NAS devices are. If speed is not your thing, you can also setup link aggregation as a means of redundancy, ensuring that if one port dies, your data keeps flowing.

Like all Nighthawk gear, the S8000 comes with a 3-year warranty, and it will hit the retail channel on March 31, 2017 for $100 USD.
