GlacialTech Igloo 5750 Silent CPU Cooler Review
by AkG     |     February 10, 2008

Conclusion

The Igloo 5750 is designed as a low noise cooler and it does perform this task fairly well. In testing it did outperform Intel’s stock cooler with reduced noise levels and even allowed for a slightly better overclock. GlacialTech has also priced the 5750 quite well at around $40CAD so it you are looking for a budget-minded cooling solution, this heatsink should warranty a second glance. We also really liked the fact that the two stock 92mm fans can be easily swapped out and replaced with something with a little more power. While there are quite a few endearing qualities about the Igloo, there are quite a few issues we had with it as well.

While this cooler can mounted on just about any CPU on the market, mounting it can be difficult and it can not be considered a truly user friendly setup. This has more to do with the overall design rather than a buggered mounting systems since Glacialtech uses the standard "push-pin" type method for Intel systems. However, the real weakness of this unit is its low profile fans. The fans that are coupled to the Igloo cannot be considered truly “silent” fans, and their construction and reliance on a less than optimal bearing design does add up to some longevity concerns. Worse still is their higher potential for significant noise increases as they age. In this instance two fans are not better than one and GlacialTech would have been much better off in dropping the second fan and using this additional fiscal resource to invest in one bigger, yet truly silent fan. This would also have had the added bonus of making mounting a lot easier, as you would have an additional 20mm to access those two front recessed plungers.

In its present configuration the Igloo 5750 does perform well for its price and market niche. Just make sure you are aware of its potential negatives before buying.

Pros:

- Good performance on dual-core chips
- Great looks
- Low noise fans
- “Tool-less” installation for 775
- Cross platform compatible

Cons:

- Less than optimal fan bearing design
- Low profile fans
- Short warranty
- Mounting issues
- Not a “tool less” installation for AMD systems
