Hey, what I would do is find a thin sheet of translucent (i think that's the word I'm looking for) plastic, to use to defuse the glow from the cold cathodes, cut that out in the shape of the mesh, put in behind the mesh then the light source behind it. You might be able to get the plastic off the cover of a binder or something along those lines. Just an idea :)
