Dell and Alienware are the same company now... and really Dell is trying to let Alienware take over the Gaming scene... so I wouldn't go with Dell...

But if your going to spend 2000+ on a gaming computer why are you going with a Laptop that isn't even close to a PC you can build for the same price... M17x starts at 2,599... You could do easily do Tri-SLI with GTX 280's for that price..

But if your set on the laptop I'd go with the m17x

I still have my Hypersonic Aviator laptop from a few years back, back when I actually needed a mobile gaming platform. While the laptop itself is (was) excellent, they don't get my recommendation, since their customer service was largely incompetent. What started out as a failed memory SODIMM turned into a $100 shipping bill to NY state (even with their premium warranty), which turned in a two week wait before they ran some memory tests, whcih came up negative. They sent it back (shipping charges due on delivery), except that they forgot to send back my case with it (packed the thing in styro peanuts), and never replied to my emails asking about the case. So I finally just went out and bought a few sticks of memory, and the problem was solved. And then I bought a case, and wiped my hands of the company entirely.

If you're serious about gaming, make sure you spec the unit with a 8800M GTX graphics card. In the field of laptops, it's a pretty serious jump above even the next-best, although your battery life will obviously be non-existent. Skip the quad-cores, unless you're positive that you can use the cores, since a laptop will be happier without the extra heat dump. You might actually consider looking at SLI offerings, since the 17" laptops have a native resolution of 19x12, which can actually take advantage of dual cards. Definitely spec 7200rpm hard drives - those 2.5" drives need all the help they can get.

Oh but since money is no issue grab the "Voodoo Envy HW:201," it should be the best bet, only "$6,176"... but you might need about $1000 worth of add-ons to make it great!

its a oxymoron, laptops are not for gaming, they consume too much power and generate too much heat and you really dont get much for your money

Okay I hate when people say that a Gaming Laptop is an Oxymoron, because a oxymoron is a figure of speech that combines two normally contradictory terms. They build "Gaming Laptops" so it is not an oxymoron, could there be any other reason to build laptops with good graphics, expecially ones that are SLI capable? They aren't as good as a desktop Gaming Computer but Gaming laptops do work, and you can play high end games on them.... so it is not an oxymoron.

I have an XPS M170 and It worked very well for gaming for several years.

It is an oxymoron in my opinion because it fits your description of one.

My definition of a laptop
-A portable computer

My definition of a laptop that can game, especially one with SLI
-A semi-portable computer that needs to be plugged as the battery is good for 5 minutes. Therefore making it unmovable. Also, anything with a 17inch screen really stops being portable.

I think my expectations are too high for a gaming laptop.
