Sometimes Diablo 2 can have its days where it can get really laggy, I'll give my thumbs down for that, but it is very rare. I played for 3 hours last night (everyone was away or doing something) and didn't have one spike of lag. The only time lag usually happens is when people are trying to find Uber Diablo because they are looking for a certain IP where SOJs are being sold, or duping is happening. For now, though, duping is at a minimum because the ladder has just reset, so not many people have enigmas and BOTDs. Battle.net has been in use since the early Warcraft Battle.net Edition (was is WC2?). They will keep Battle.net maintained because even though many games of theirs are OLD, hundreds of thousands still play those games today. Starcraft, which is run on Battle.net, is still widely popular, especially in South Korea. Warcraft 3 is still today's best RTS IMHO. And Diablo 2? Well it sits right in the middle. The isometric third person view gives the game an RPG type feeling, but it has a hell of a lot more action involved that in any other RPG I've played. It's easy, it's fairly fast, and PvP is HARD. If you're in to FPS; Far Cry, Unreal Tournament 3, FEAR and Doom 3 are all excellent games. If RTS is more your thing; C&C3, C&C Generals, and World in Conflict (takes a bit to master the camera but, WOW, such a great game!) Also, EA is putting out a new C&C soon. Check out COMMAND & CONQUER RED ALERT 3 if you're interested. If you like RTS's, but prefer to take your time making decisions, and like the long, slow type of play; check out Sins of a Solar Empire (Best turn based strategy game ever made!), Civ4 or Heroes of Might and Magic 5 and it's gazillion expansions. And last, but not least, if you simply want to play an action game that allows you to take all your pent-up aggression and rage, and channel it in to the mind-blowing experience of playing an angry, rage-fueled vigilante cop... grab Max Payne 1 and 2. I know they're fairly old games, but they are SO sweet! And with the movie coming out, it's perfect timing for getting to know the story. ;)
