Default Battlefield 4 & Windows 8.1 - what an improvment it is!

Not sure if I should have put this in the BF4 thread but since this is such a dramatic improvement in BF4 performance I thought I would start with this separate thread. Posted this at my gaming clan's website and on Guru, Anandtech & Tom's , figured I would share my finding here as well to spread good performing BF4 love.

Yesterday on Black Friday I went out and snagged a 180 GB Intel SSD and after much thinking decided to pick up a copy of Windows 8, upgrading my Windows 7 64 bit. I figured since I had to reinstall OS I might as well do it with W8, also because everything I had read about BF4 running much much better using it.

Well, what an understatement.

Using the same 331.93 beta drivers that came out a few days ago in W7, with video card options on high, no msaa, hbao on, my frames were never consistent (as with every other driver I tried). They bounced around 60 - 100frames, half the time miscrostuttering. I tried different drivers, all sorts of tweaks to get the frames as close to 100 consistently as possible. No dice. Some days the game seemed to run a little better than others, probably due to server patches.

Installed W8, took the free .1 upgrade and snagged "classic shell" to get rid of the god awful tablet UI. Downloaded and installed the game and all that good stuff. Enabled SLI. Nothing was changed except for the OS. Played for about 6 hours and literally never dipped below 100 frames (where I have my refresh rate set at for the 120 Hz monitor). Seriously, it stayed at a constant 100 on the server, even when it was full. Now I'm going to turn up the refresh to 120 and see if I can get a solid 120 frames.

So, if your thinking of a OS reinstall or a new pc and want to play BF4 at great frames, get Windows 8. Cheapest and best upgrade a player can do.

Goddamnit. There's way too many anecdotal cases of BF4 running smoother on W8 compared to W7 for me not to upgrade. I get good frames but I get spikes where I shouldn't (this seems to be a common complaint in W7 with BF4). I picked up W8.1 free from my college, but I'm really not looking forward to redoing an OS install. Maybe I should have skipped BF4...

Yeah, windows upgrade is the fix to rubberbanding and micro stutter in bf4. I've spent hours tweaking and the rubber banding is still there.

I'm still not getting it, ms can go to hell. O.K. i'll probably fold but MS can still go to hell.

Glad to know it works well on W8, to bad my notebook that has Windows 8 on it can barely run BF4 (it has an AMD A10-4745 with Radeon 8610G lol)

Think I will be able to play on low settings with an i5 4200u and GT750m?

Edit: Specifically on 8.1 I mean.

GPU wise you'll be fine, CPU wise it's on the cusp.

Yeah I was thinking the same, any throttling from turbo speeds and I think I will definitely be boned. Might have to pick up a small cooler but I'll give it a shot first.

Does this have to do with core parking?

I remember Metro Last Light was unplayable with stuttering until core parking was disabled in Windows 7.

Yukon....no issues at all with W7 and BF4 or any other DX11 title for that matter....dont know what the issues are with W7 but everything works great here...no stuttering, no crashing....before or after the latest patch.
