As a disclaimer I'm not sure if these are the best games in terms of design or technical stuff or anything along those lines these are the games that have stuck with me the most in my memory. I'm also not entire sure on the order as they span many genres so I'm not putting them in any order.

Deus Ex
Rome Total War
Supreme Commander FA
Dark Force 2
Soul Reaver 2

Honorable mentions Half Life1, Republic Commando, KOTOR, Dragon Age Origins, Dishonored, Oblivion and Wing Commander 2.

As much as the tech behind games has advanced and as pretty as they are today most of them are missing something for me. Dont get me wrong I really like Borderlands 2, Bioshock Infinite, Skyrim and others, but a lot feel like they are trying to blind you with graphics while underdevoloping story and characters. If we blend todays tech with some of the development skill of a decade ago I think we could have some amazingly immersive and amazing games I just dont think we are there yet with the industry as a whole. I feel the same way about most of today's movies, they arent necessarily better just shinier.

I have to say though its quite interesting reading this thread and seeing just what peoples favorite games are. I reserve the right to change my list at a whim.

My top five in no particular order:

1) Half Life 2 Series... I know that's more than one but I don't care lol
2) Borderlands 2
3) Doom 3
4) Far Cry (the original)
5) Bioshock Infinite

Interstate '76
Carmageddon
Vietcong
Call Of Duty: United Offensive
Medal Of Honor: Allied Assault

There hasn't been a game in the last 10 years that competes with any of the above imo.

Not a comprehensive list since I just woke up and the brain is still asleep. I've had lots of great games pass through my Pc's over the years. System shock is still number 1 though imho.

1) System Shock
2) Doom (Series)
3) Deus Ex (Original)
4) Syndicate
5) Half Life

In no order:
Wind Commander Series
Bioshock 1
Populous 1
Borderlands Series

With either Doom 1, GTA Series, Kings Quest, Super Mario Bros Series, COD MW1 or Contra...too hard to pick as these oldies defined a lot of their respective genres.

How could you not have money island on there with great lines like these

Guybrush: You’re about as fearsome as a doorstop.
Murray the demonic talking skull: Is it a really evil-looking doorstop?
Guybrush: Never mind.

but at least there is borderlands where Knox Rox:P

Hey again. So I just got a birthday card from the Admiral. It's got a picture of a dragon on it and it says, 'To my special friend on his birthday, flame on!' And the dragon is lighting the candles on a cake with his fire breath... (sigh) That doesn't even make sense to me. That's like mowing your lawn with a nuclear weapon. It's not even my birthday. I need to kill you so I can leave. Maybe just kill yourself and save me the trouble, mate.

I just thought of another one: Castles and Castles II. I remember killing DAYS on those games.

That and Freespace II.
