Minecraft

So, does anyone on HWC run a Minecraft Server?

If so how do you set it up?

I'm interested in hosting one, so any and all advice would be appricaited.

I've run a few, are you planning on hosting at home or with an external host? First you'll want to use bukkit, not the vanilla minecraft server. Bukkit Forums If you're running it at home, you'll need quite a lot of ram and preferably an SSD to run the server on to decrease texture load times.

Yeah I can dedicate a Tower to doing it I think. I have sufficent Ram, there won't be many on it.

Setup a linux box to do it it'll work the best due to memory handling is better.

You also need to make sure that when you are running the server you don't do much else with your bandwidth.

I run one on my home server for my kids and they love it, I like it too as I build all sorts of ruins and temples for them to explore. It doesn't take much in terms of hardware to run one, if you are opening it up to remote users bandwidth is the biggest limiting factor. Check out www.canirunaminecraftserver.com to see if your connection is up to the task provided you don't have a cap on your monthly internet traffic.

I just recently started playing myself, does anyone on here know of a decent server? Or does HWC have one of their own?

If you browse the minecraft forums a bit, I'm sure you will find kid friendly servers with strict rules. I have a bunch of friends who could set up a server, but they would never be 24/7 since they can't afford a dedicated server.

Another option is setting yourself one, which is very easy and straightforward if you google instructions.

Hey fellow HWC'ers!
I haven't been really up to date on the site much lately but I would like to catch up.

I actually just started a minecraft server myself with a friend. If anyone would like to join shoot me a PM and I will add you to the whitelist. Looking to create a fun environment for building, mining, crafting and socializing without the usual people you encounter on most random servers.

really hoping some users play minecraft. I must say it looks like crap but is quite addicting.
