You're confusing Romero with Carmack . Carmack was and still is the genius where Romero helped with his enthusiasm and general game conceptualization. He was never involved in Doom 3 and has constantly failed with his misadventures since, including Monkey Stone Games to being an editor of a gaming magazine. He's all over the map and has been divorced more times then sequels of Doom !.

Carmack is the genius.
