I have a feeling that there's an EA "patch" in the works to close those loopholes....

Though from what I've been reading recently about the ais in the game I'm unsure if even then. Its really sound like the hackiest solution they could have come up with, and since its such a fundamental part of the game...

GAH! Having such an issue right now in my city... I'm constantly being told to build more residential, but it already takes up an easy 5/8's of my city. And I'm running out of room fast! I think the core of the issue is because I can't get my residents to build skyscrapers except for the heart of my city. They insist on living in suburbs and I just can't do anything with them. My entire city is high density streets, and I've built parks everywhere... they just won't build up!

I'm also suffering from a sever lack of funds. I struggle by on 1k-4k per day while I hear reports of everyone else in the game making millions. I have two coal mining facilities that produce plenty, and I have trade depots with storage for coal and lots of trucks. I've also built a freight storage facility, but my factories still shut down due to lack of freight shipment while the storage remains empty!? I also built a recycling plant, but the plant fills up and I hardly produce and metals or plastics per day. WTF am I doing wrong?

I have tons of transit, health, police, fire and education, and my city is generally happy. But I just seem to be missing some key elements along the way.

As for your money problem make sure you build a trade port because only then can you sell your resources on the global market, where you'll make all your money. In my mining city I had about 10 mines split between coal and ore, 3 refineries, and several trade depot's for extra store in addition to my trade port. To upgrade my HQ I stock piled a bunch of metal and alloy and coal by setting my depots to local use only, then once they were all full, set them to sell on the market and you should be able to hit the upgrade goal on the HQ.

You need to unlock smelting as the raw ores really don't sell for that much, but when smelted their value triples or quadruples.

One of the hardest cities to start up and run is the type of city I love though electronics. Soo much up front costs to get it up and running, though once it's running (and without traffic stopping my trade port trucks) I am making millions in a simcity day. One of my fully upgraded facilities costs me 1.9 to 2.4k an hour to run plus buying alloy and plastics. Look at how cheap it is to run your mining operations, and you'll see why it's challenging

I started out the same way headshot mentioned. Mine coal/ore. ( lots of ore mines, at one point I had 12 in my city alone) You're gonna wanna have a green balance to start with because cash won't be coming in for some time. As soon as you drop your trade depot all of that changes. Start exporting everything that you mine. Once you upgrade your mining HQ , drop a smelter. Produce alloy and metal. Expand your trading depots. Start selling alloy and metals ( They're worth a lot more than coal and ore). At that point your hourly income will be in the red there's just no way around it. Doesn't matter tho because you'll make enough from trading.

Then starts the fun part. Once you get a good amount of cash, start investing in processors ( you'll need at least 5 medium-hightech factories in your city). Processors require alloy and plastic. You already make alloy so use them locally. Plastic you'll have to import. You can also drop a recycling center if you have the population to support it. Between the 2 of them you'll have enough plastic to supply your processor factories. Then once your monthly sales in electronics is high enough, plot an electronics HQ. From there continue expanding your processor sales. You'll eventually reach the tv/computer factory. At that point you can get rid of all of your ore mines and trading depots. You'll need plastic, alloy and processors. You can import the first 2 and fabric the processors. Don't forget to upgrade your trading HQ either. You'll need the massive trading depot down the road. Allows you to ship goods from train, road and sea effectively increasing your income massively.

I started out that way. Built up a city, ran into a few problems along the way ( nuclear power plant blew up) , but at one point I was sitting on 30 mil. I used that cash to start another city. In that city, I have 1/4 of the map for the actual city and the rest is for processors/ Tv factories. I make 14 millions a day. Made 50 mil in no time, dropped that into another city and now I just started a build that I couldn't of done without a lot of cash.

So focus on specializations. Sell your goods to the global market. Both "cash cow cities" have -70k hourly but I make millions a day so it doesn't matter.
