Default Want: DnD Alternative

Yes, I'm talking about the paper version of DnD. I'm hoping to play it again with some friends, but the more chances we can have to avoid paper the better. So...

Does anyone know of a DnD-style game (that's cheap or free) that's a software version that can be played by low-end laptops or maybe netbooks? I dont quite know how to describe it better than that...

I know there are some browser-based games, but I don't know of any that are really good...

Thanks all.

I've been starting a trend with my DnD group...I've been hunting down the PDF copies of books and modules possible (for the last 2ish years) and I've been using my netbook for keeping my characters on
IIRC wizards made a character creator for 3.5e, there is the core rules and core rules 2.0/expansion for 2e
that's one possible option for you

Thanks for the info, i had forgotten about using PDF versions instead of carrying around books :P
Any chance you could send me a link to where you found them?

Any extra ideas or info you guy may have would be great btw, and it DOESN'T need to be DnD. It can be another game, so long as its similar. Thanks dudes.

There also seems to be some homemade DM-ing tools out there... Keeping an eye on those.

As a former AD&D player I can tell you that there are PDFs of early White Dwarf magazine out there, definitely worth it. That is the shop that created the Fiend Folio, and classes they released (Necromancer, Demonist, Bandit, etc) though intended to be NPCs are far better then the Unearthed Arcana nonsense.

Another classic floating out there is Aftermath. I rather liked it because instead of buying modules you could take a current map of your own city, decide how it died and what it has become. Post-nuclear, zombie apocalypse, whatever.

Thanks for the info thus far guys. Any word of a DM manager or similar software? Or newer (I.E. not outdated) character generators?
