ship battles
 
was wondering if theres any newer games out maybe similar to tortuga. doesn't have to be pirates like tortuga but anything ship battle based. But not rts something where u acually control the ship

There is Commander: conquest of the americas game by paradox as well
Totem Games - naval combat games developer. for civil war/ironclad combat
Storm Eagle Studios Entry does ww1 battleship combat style games
there is older games like the age of sail series as well.
there is the classic Pirates by sid meyer
Empire total war and napoleon total war have sailing parts of the game that can be played without the land combat parts
as does the new shogun 2 total war that comes out soon.

Well, if you don't mind the dated graphics, there's an F2P mmo I used to play called Navyfield. Basically start off as a frigate, and get newer ships/guns as you progress. You could check it out if you're interested. Link

ugh i couldnt stand navyfield. i really really wanted to like it too :(

Pirates! was a cute game that didn't have a ton of soul to it but was fun to amass a fleet to hunt down some pirates.
