Actually dual layer DVDs are ~8.5GB IIRC.

Still sucks having to download those big ass update, and it doesn't continue if your connection drops ... fail on EA part.

In this day and age, you really should have a fast, reliable internet connection.

It only takes me an hour to download and install BF3, including all updates. And that's on an average internet connection here in Winnipeg, not exactly the heart of fast data connection.

You forget that this is Canada, and your second-world internet connection in cities is nice compared to the third world internet connections available everywhere else. There is not always cable or dsl available.

For some the options are:
dialup(brb, shooting myself)
sat(expensive, laggy, poor service, where is the nearest cliff?)
random small wireless ISPs(laggy, slow, low&expensive caps, the only real option, often any P2P traffic is outright banned and netflix is not advisable)

If you don't have decent internet, can you really expect to play online FPS's in the first place?

I have played lots of stuff online, you just have to get that one server with a ping of less than 100.
But that is not the point, the point was having to download absurd quantities of data.

Here is an example:
I have BF 2142 deluxe or something, the one that came with Northern Strike. Everything was fine until they released NS for free and included it in the latest patch. At the time I had a monthly cap of 6GB and each additional GB was $2.50. I got annoyed that they did not offer a patch that excluded most of northern strike for the bandwidth conscious people who already had NS installed. I appreciate that it was made free, do not get me wrong but I have not played BF2142 since. At the time I would have liked to see something that only had the updates for the main game and NS instead of all of NS as an option.(but not the only one, I get that the patch that included all of NS was useful for many people.)
There are always more important things to download. Now I have 12GB/month, but again, always something with higher priority and I sort of just stopped caring about BF2142. *shrug* so I guess it does not matter anymore.

In the case of ARMA II I used to play with some people here but eventually there were just too many multi-GB mods and playwithsix used p2p, my ISP has a zero-tolerance policy wrt p2p. There are no options for other ISPs for me. dialup and sat are simply not acceptable.
And moving is not an option either do not even think it.

I still race online with people using GT Legends. People all over the world even, that is nice.
And to download games with steam(such as Race 07, but all other steam stuff too) I take my notebook somewhere else and get it done. However not all services offer backing up games or copying them to another computer... Such as Simraceway. SRW encrypts all it's data and those files only work on the computer used to download. There is absolutely no option to move them to another computer even if you use it with the same SRW account. It is completely locked down.

Speaking of F2P... NFS World let me easily copy the install directory between computers, but that game got boring fast enough that the updates are no longer worth downloading. And the players are annoying wankers too.

Anyway, sigh.

GT Legends, Ghost Recon, etc
