The Gamersgate version unfortunately is not very well-supported. It also doesn't support the DLCs, which is a HUGE downside. I would suggest that your friend grab a copy of the game off of Steam next time they put it on sale for around $10.

There is also a GOTY edition coming this fall for $60 that includes all the DLCs (even the unreleased one). I'll be posting about it in the other Borderlands thread in a sec.
