I waited over 15 hours for WoW to download the game and all the updates last night (I lost my Wrath CD), and just came across this thread. EVE definitely has piqued my interest, but that graph (along with everything else I've read about needing a big friend network, among others things) is worrying me about the game. I used to be an Everquest RP'er so immersion into a breathing game world is a big thing for me, and one of my main attractions to EVE from what I've read.

Soul - having recently moved from WoW, how are you finding it?

Considering both the enviroment on WoW (3 years of play now I think for me) I'm never, ever , ever going back.

Blizzard soured me so greatly with their ability to state the obvious and never work out the bugs that us higher end computer users had.

Eve has a steep ass learning curve, but that keeps the game interesting for me.
That and there is risk. Your ship blows up, well its gone mate...and your pod gets destroyed, so are you.
I love risk for a change.

Three of my friends play Eve.. and geek it up every time we all get together. They want me to start playing.. but after the hole that FFXI left (a good 7 solid years gone) i'm hesitent to start up Eve. Of course.. I have FFXIV on preorder..

There is NOTHING so far in gaming that I have experienced more than the rush of running a Low Sec Mining Operation.

Just the fact that I am flying 300 million ISK worth of Retreiver (with another 100 million worth of implants in my head)... Working as hard as I can to mine, control mining drones, fill cans, communicate with the players who are hauling, and the others who are patrolling... all the while keeping an eye on the Local Channel for any chatter and finally, keeping an eye on the targetting window for suddenly uncloaking ships...

That's stressful and fun all at the same time baby!

Learning curve is not as deadly as some say. Simple fact is that you need to understand that you can't be a Jack of All Trades in EvE. You need to focus on one thing, and then dabble in a few others. A programme like EvEMon (which is a mini-game in of itself IMO) is a good tool to help plot your training path and see all the options, ships, gear and skills you might like to have and use.

Cheers!

Oh EVE ... How I wish I had the patience. It looks and sounds awesome, I've played the trial a couple times over the years, but I just can't handle the waiting.

I've been playing off and on for the last 4-5 years and have built up a decent skillset. I can run lvl 3 missions solo, I do mining in a hulk, I have a cloaked ship and I also do salvage. I may get back into it this fall/winter. I might be interested in joing a mining corp in lo-sec with some friendlies. I usually buy my time codes from shatteredcrystal.

Eve online is not just a game, its a Social Political Economic Simulation set in space

Been playing sense beta, 7 years now i think.

in eve, You control your life in game just like out of it, from your ship's to the market's to Space it self. Its a Slow (very) slow paced game, intertwined with intense moments of skull thumping, heart beating, OMG am getting blown up, am losing my new ship i toke months to save up for moments that Makes eve Not for the faint of hearts. You can lose days, and weeks of money making in minutes if not seconds. But all this is wy i say eve is a simulation.

The smallest of Alliance's can be snowballed into massive power position's, and the Mightiest of empires can crumble like a dryed up leaf. Anything can happen in EVE, its never more apparent every day, just last week, some kid lost about 1300$can(yes real money) by losing a ship in game with 74 PLEX's (in game items that are used to top up your account with game time, each one is worth 1 month, they are purchased with real money and sold in game for ISK, in game money). and every sense they made plex's to legalize selling game time for in game money(isk) everything in game now as a RL money value on it, and when you routinely fly ship's that are worth 200-2000$ (some are worth 3k$can) it makes you think a little about what it means especially for traders and Industrialist like myself.

and Low-sec is only good for pirate's, the real workhorse of EVE is 0.0(null-sec), i cant stand anything higher then 0.0 personally hehe

btw that graph is still perty accurate, although the past 2 years CCP as been working hard to make the game more friendly to new players, but like life, you gotta learn to hold your head up, crawl before your can walk and run.

If you ever wondered where my quote in my sig comes from, its From EVE-Online.

Heh, I haven't been to Null Sec yet, nor do I plan on it for a while yet.
I Do enjoy playing cat and mouse in my thorax and Celestis though with low sec Pirates.
No kills up on the board yet, but no losses either :)

It really is an involved game, but once you get the hang of it, and finish the initial grind to get somewhere it becomes very rewarding indeed.
And like Paramatrix said, there is risk.

I love risk..

When they decided last month to untie PLEX from a specific space station and make it "transportable", I thought to myself ... "Who in their right mind is going to fly with a shipment of PLEX in their hold? That is insanely risky! I would never do that!"

But, I guess greed got the better of that kid and he thought he could move all that PLEX from one area and then sell it at a huge profit somewhere else.

There is only one hard and fast rule in EvE Online...

"Don't fly anything (or with a hold full of anything), you can't afford to lose."

Live by that rule and you are golden!

Cheers!

Very very True. Its why I fly around in Low Sec with Cheap but capable ships.

I live by the old German Pocket Battleship rule:

"I can outrun anything I cannot outfight, and I can outfight anything I cannot Outrun'

The good thing is though, I don't want a kill board. To me a win is when the Pirate flees from me giving him too much damage (I am not fitted to tackle).
Forcing a pirate to Retreat or being equipped well enough to GTFO , is good enough for my Low Sec Experience.
Though true to another naval tradition, I have a Few Q-Ships now that just wander and wait.
So far, hunting has been good.
