Default Wide Screen Gaming

Well I finally found the time to investigate why my gaming pc bit the dust a few months back. On first boot, it would run fine for approx 10 mins then freeze the screen. Reboot would sometimes get to windows but mostly stick at the nice windows symbol. Busy with race cars, it has sat dormant ever since. Well did a little research on the net this week, could be a dead HDD. Considering the OS was running off 2x500gb Seagates in Raid, could be the culprit, so i picked up a nice Kingston 64GB SSD.

Plugged it in, took out all my four std HDD's, went through the Win 7 setup. First boot went fine, then it locked again.....GRR, now im thinking its the MB. While messing with the PC, i noticed the top exhaust fan had become stuck with one of the fan blades wedged under part of the top frame of the case! Fixed it..... and the PC has be stout ever since! A simple stuck fan must have been shorting the PS and locking the PC. Well all four HDD's back online now, and its faster than ever in Win 7 64 bit with the SSD :) Only question on the drives, is how im going to mount the SSD.... no more room to add it. Might get inventive and mount it on some other part of the case.

Now to the reason for my post. Ive got a renewed energy for my gamer now that i found it wasnt another dead MB or something even worse. My specs should be in my sig, but if not, I have 3x 226bw Samsung, 2ms speedsters, powered by a Digital TH2G. Now if anyone has searched for info on the TH2G, knows the headaches involved with getting 5040x1050 to work. I finall got it to work with VERY outdated Nvidia drivers a while back, but once i got it running i was very happy.

Well on this go around, ive thankfully got it running spotlessly at 5040x1050 at 60 and LOVING it. Latest Nvidia drivers are working a treat, obviously they looked into the lack of support for wide screen setups. Ive started this thread to throw up a few shots of my setup, which ill do in the next few days. The game room needs a clean up after tearing down and rebuilding my gamer a few times. Oh and still not a single leak in the cooling system, and water is clear air, and its sat for 3 months.

In the next few weeks, im thinking of selling my 2xGTX285's with WB's, and will probably either give ATI eyefinity a try with a 5850, or the new GTX480. Anyone interested, hit PM.

I've been a user of the th2g for a long time, so i can feel your pain in finding the right drivers to run the POS at anything more than 4xxx x 768.

I've since upgraded my system to a 5870, got my dumb little dongle and eyefinity is soooooooooooooo much easier to use than the th2g. so much so that i've recently buggerd up my 5870 and am waiting on an rma and i havnt even entertained the notion of putting the th2g back in till it shows up. thats how sick of the th2g i am.

I've also got nvidia's surround system on another computer. nvidias version is still beta but it sux balls just the same. its better than the th2g and about as easy to use as eyefinity, but unless you can afford sli your out of the loop. If you can afford SLI, then get a superb cooling system along with it because those suckers are F@CKING LOUD and a better psu because they suck alot of juice as well.

Some people will tell you that nvidia's version must be better because at triple screen resolutions sli will help alot, and that its better bacause it'll work on any monitor without the need for a dongle. These people are Idiots. They're right about SLI... sortof... i can play all current games at maximum IQ at maximum resolution with the ATI eyefinity and more than enough FPS for anyone, so the need for SLI is pretty much moot. Yes it'll be better... but still not enough real world better to warrant the extra cost of the second graphics card. And the dongle? I'd rather pay 100 bucks for a dongle than 250 bucks for a second graphics card, especially when the dongle doesnt need 300 W of power, create 90 decibles of noise and enough heat to roast a chicken in your box.

My System Specs

Yes, but the OP already has 2x GTX285's. Honestly though, he could pick up 2x GTX460 1GB cards to enable DX11 and it would probably have better performance than the 2x285's.

he'll likely have performance issues with nvidia's surround and the gtx 285s though. especially in games that arnt SLI optimised.

for example i've got 2 gtx 480s which are far superior to the 285s and i can only manage 40 fps at max IQ max res in the dark tower bench of just cause 2

You got that right about the pain of the TH2G. I jumped in with both feet while eyefinity was in its infancy, and ive always been a Nvidia user so I thought it would be ok. For some reason, its running great at full res, but only half the games are seeing the full res, so a few more tweaks and ill be happy. Pics are coming, had a gong show of a weekend, so none just yet.

For now, i decided ill hold onto what i have (285's). i played a few of my simulator games, and its running very strong. Pushed up the Precision settings past FTW cards, so Im still glad i never paid extra for the FTW version of the GTX285. I tidied up the case a little, still have the two raid drives sitting ontop of the case, with no room for them inside. I ran 3D Vantage last night, and highest temp was 50degs at full usage. That was with all the fans in the case turned down to minimum, so its definately the quietest pc ive had. Not bad considering it has 13 fans.....

Now i thought the 480 would be far superior too, but i saw some reports, showing the improvement was around 10-15% increase in power. Considering my games are not pushing the limit, and i may only be getting 30+ fps, its still very smooth and playable, so i cant see the need to rush out on the 480. I think ill wait for a few more revisions, maybe ill wait for the 5xx series, and same with ATI cards, the 285's are fitting the bill nicely. And as someone who's $ goes to a few more fronts than just computer components, I dont want to be shelling out for a couple of 480's right now.
