It's actually derived from Friedrich Barbarossa (meaning redbeard) who was the holy Roman Emporer during the second crusade (if I remember right). He actually drowned in his armor on the way to the crusade while crossing a stream- they carried him the rest of the way in a pickle barrel so he wouldn't rot.
