Here's my top three and why they were great:

Freelancer
  • Easy to play space sim
  • Good selection of weapons and ships
  • Great story

Dungeon Keeper
  • A chance to be the bad guy
  • Dungeon construction and management
  • First person gameplay
  • Tongue-in-cheek humor

Master of Orion II
  • Leaders for both ships and colonies
  • Extremely customizable ships
  • Tactical space combat
  • Good balance between research, colony management, exploration, diplomacy and combat

I would play any remake or spiritual successor that held on to these key features while updating the game engine.

I'm so glad Perfect Dark is being remade. That took up so much of my youth, now it's back with better graphics and Xbox Live capability!

How about another No One Lives Forever?

From IGN
Quote:
No One Lives Forever (NOLF) combines a first-rate plot, grandiose explosions, superb dialogue, and plenty of trigger-happy action to make for one of the best gaming experiences we've had all year.
Yup it was awesome, and so was NOLF 2. So why is it abandoned? Give us NOLF 3, lol! *installs NOLF*

I agree. You would think there would be as many space combat games as World War 2 games.

I wish there was a mix of Sword of the Stars and Sins of a solar empire and Homeworld. That I think would be a good mix.

Have you played Sins of a Solar Empire? Pretty damn close to MOO2. No ship customization though. Easily my most played game in 10 years.

Likely my favourite genre but I haven't seen damn near anything in 10 years.

I liked the scrollers. R-Type, Pitfall, Seaquest...
