List of games that started as mods?
 

Hey guys,

I was just wondering if anybody knows of a list that exists showing a time line or just an overall list of games that originally started out as mods and than turned into full fledged games either at retail or via steam or similar methods of digital distribution.

I can think of a couple games off the top of my head but i do not know of them all.

I tried Google and could not find such a list.

This is just kind of a curiosity thing for myself.

First one that comes to mind is Counterstrike ... as I wasted many hundreds of hours on it back in high school. lol

Most of Valve's multiplayer games are ideas that they bought from the modding community.

I think the concept for left4dead started with the counter-strike (source) zombie mods. When was portal ever a mod?

Red Orchestra started as mod for the unreal engine. the modders won a unreal modding contest and won the rights to use the engine without a licensing fee.

Also, Natural Selection 2 originated from a mod from the original half-life.

Portal is based on a game called Narbacular Drop which was developed by a small group of students (who were later hired by Valve to work on Portal). It wasn't a mod per se, but it wasn't a full game.

Total Annihilation evolved from mods into Spring.

There was a time where it was just an engine and you needed the original TA installed
for the textures, but I believe they have went way beyond that now.
I downloaded it once, but never did install it, so that's about all I know of it.

DotA clones maybe?

I don't think Total Annihilation counts because it went from a retail game to a mod, although i guess that could be the same as a game going from a mod to a game.

I'm just trying to come up with a list of games we would not have without a modding community on PC. But to show the importance of a modding community i was mainly looking for games that went from Mod to Retail.

Battlefield 2 because of a mod for BF1942 called desert combat. Possibly Battlefield Vietnam because of a mod for BF1942 called eve of destruction. EA actually hired the guys that made Desert Combat. I personally believe Battlefield 1942 had some of the best mods of all time and some of the most too.

If anyone plays racing games, Simbin the makers of Race on, Race 07, GTR Evolution etc...started by making a GT mods for F1 2002 game and then released GTR FIA GT Championship.
