I'm not that much of a gamer, but I've always kinda turned up my nose at these kind of programs when they cost some change....

Just noticed this one over on the MajorGeeks website and it's a free Beta so it might be worth a shot.

Game Booster | Better Play Experience | Game Accelerator

Basic idea is that it's a one-stop click to disable background apps when you want to game, and a single click to return back to normal day to day operations.

Probably not worth it for single player games, but might be handy for Multi-Player FPS games where a slightly higher framerate can give you an edge over other players.

I personally would rather just close any background programs I have running manually than installing another thing that I have no knowledge of exactly what it does. And if someone's PC is so slow that it is getting in the way of their ability to play games online, I think an upgrade would be in order.

I downloaded it just to have a look. It seems to work as advertised. I shuts down services and restarts them after you are done. It checks programs that are running and asks if you want to shut them off. As for making a difference, my 3DMark06 changed about 70 or so. Not a big difference. I will try a couple of runs of the Farcry 2 Bench and see what that does later.

This is great for someone who isn't sure what to turn off or stop and trusts it. Easy to set up, single click to shut stuff off and it will stay running until you click the button to put everything back to normal. Oh yeah, when I shut down my processes and programs it said that it recovered 299MB. My system is a Vista x64 with 4 GB of RAM. My current memory tool in the sidebar shows 1253MB used (with my normal stuff running and only the browser).

I haven't played with it yet, but I'm thinking that it might also be useful for things like super-pi runs, and/or benching during memory tweaking.
