The Mother of All Games - On XP?

I was looking for a particular file, and I came across Scorched Earth 1.5. Naturally fond memories of a bunch of us jammed in front a of computer drinking beer and blowing the bejesus out of each other's tanks immediately came to mind, so I unzipped it and went to play a game. XP appears to be a no go for some reason. If I just tried running it, one of the Nvidia dll's would come up with a 16bit subsystem error. Same thing if I created a new shortcut and forced it into Win95 compatibility mode. I got it to run on an old P2 at work running Win98SE once I found a DOS mouse driver, so I copied that configuration file over to XP and wound up stuck at a blank screen with out of range showing on my LCD. I'm guessing modern hardware just can't handle games from the 90's, or is there a way to make it work on XP? I know there was a couple of remakes, but they just didn't have the same charm.

Did you try running it with dosbox or something similar?

niiice. i remember when this game pretty much represented pc gaming at its finest. dumped a lot of hours into this for sure.

I was looking for this game the other day, played it back on windows 3.1 and couldnt remember what it was called, thanks. Now just need to figure out how to play it in vista.

Just the same way Dr_BenD_over got it to work in XP, dosbox.

Seriously dosbox is a incredible saviour for all of us that like to play some of the old games.

I have also found that it is nice to have a frontend for dosbox and for that I use a program called DOSShell by Loonies Software. I find it helps keep the old dos games in one easy to access spot.

Oh and you can also install Windows 3.11 within dosbox now, just incase you want to run the old win 3.11 games as well. You can see how using this guide.
