Default Need Help deciding PS3 or Xbox 360

Hey guys, I am new to this forum and joined because alot of people really answer your questions. Anways my birthday is coming up soon and my mom said that I could either have a PS3 or Xbox 360 as a present. Now, its up to me but I am having a hard time deciding.

What I know so far: PS3

8 Cores running at 3.2 GHz (only 7 actually are used)
256 MB GPU

I don't know much about the Xbox but I know that the Live service is very good even though you have to pay $60. People say that the PS3 Live sucks, but going through the forum most of the guys on the site say thats a lie.

Anyways I would love for you insight and opinions to help me decide :D

Thanks in advance,

AA93

My personal opinions from using both:
PS3 = Single-player games, upconverting dvd player, bluray player etc etc AKA better for Media/Movies/Pictures and stuff like that.
Xbox 360 = Single/multiplayer games (locally or over live) only, a better gaming machine in my opinion but more limited media functionality unless you use media center extender.

Personally, I find I am using my PS3 as a networking device / Blu Ray player more than I am using it as a games console. I used to run a HTPC and the PS3 along with a Bell HDPVR has allowed me to do away with that and has caused alot less headache than a Windows machine ever will.

From someone who owns both... I must say I prefer the PS3. I only ever use the 360 to play Gears or Halo.

Here's some points based on my opinion (no need to flame flamers)

PS3 vs 360

Online Play - This goes to the PS3 for providing a free network. Sure it isn't as refined as the 360, but you can still play all your games online. That's all I need. And for the price of free!

Games - This is a tie. Right now I think 360 has a bigger catalog, but all the games I'm waiting for at the moment all go to the PS3.

High Def Video - Not even a contest. You might even want to buy the PS3 solely for bluray/media player. The DVD upscaling is good too.

Backwards compatibility - This goes to the PS3 because I don't have any old xbox games, so I can't test this, but the PS3 has upscaling for the PS2 games (and PS1??) and it works nicely. I've picked up lots of cheap $3-$5 PS2 games since I bought the PS3.

Horsepower - This gets tricky, and people can bicker about it either way. However, I think the PS3 wins this category because they didn't rush their hardware out of the gate. They have more included devices than the 360 (gblan, wireless, memory cards). When it comes to machine power, the PS3 has more speed, hopefully leading to better physics and AI in upcoming games. The reason the 360 keeps up though is it has better video and memory than the PS3.

I have both and it comes down to this:

Do you want a media player that plays games (ps3) or a video game console that plays media (360)

if a game comes out on both systems then it is almost ALWAYS better on 360, or at worst the same. PS3 may fix the bugs later with a patch, but still.

console exclusives are rare these days, but that comes down to which franchises you like better

ps3 and 360 as divx players I say HANDS DOWN 360FTW, if your PC is running WMP11 or above (who isnt, dont need to use it, just have it installed) connection is a breeze, MUCH better picture quality, my divx look better than my dvd's

as upconverters for dvd, ps3 FTW by a long shot.

GUI is a preference, I kinda love/hate both for different reasons

downloadable stuff like patches updates, themes etc, 360 is 1000000x better at this, ps3 is a PITA takes forever to update or patch something with multiple SYSTEM resets...

as far as the "bundled hardware" do you need a card reader? wifi? more than 60gb hdd space?

live is way better than the free ps3 offering, id pay 60 a year for it any day, and I do

if you only can afford one, and you are going to get it to play games and dont need/want a blu-ray or wifi, 360 all the way. otherwise ps3

MS is a software company and sony is a hardware company, and it shows.

PS3 <--

I don't own either as I game on PC and a bit of Wii (or PS2 if I feel like playing something I played 100 times already) ;).

If it was me I'd go for the PS3. Neither has exclusives that would make me buy them so really it comes down to what the machine can do for me. And as SKY mentioned, the PS3 makes a great HTPC substitute with Blu-Ray.

if you like surfing the net like you have dialup, no video codec support or flash stuff (I know its officially supported but it doesnt work).

And if you think that upconverted dvd's are bluray quality you need a new tv...
