PS3 and DVDs

I got a PS3 (40GB) last week and was planning on using it to play the DVDs scaled up to 1080p, but my brother seems to think that playing DVDs causes more wear on the laser than Blurays do. Now since I've never heard anything like this, except from him saying that his friend had two PS3s die on him from playing DVDs (how he could possibly know that beats me), I would be lead the believe that this is not an issue and those two consoles broke from unrelated issues. And unfortunately, he assumes that everyone on the Internet hates him, and would lie saying its not a problem just to break his console, so if you could possibly provide any sources for this, I would greatly appreciate it (I couldn't find anything on Google). Thanks a ton.

Well I have used plenty of DVD's in the PS3. Also for our blue-ray player we have used probably over a hundred DVD's in it and nothing is wrong. So your brother is an idiot lol.

most likely his ps3's were either extremely dusty or in a poorly ventilated area. it should be fine to play regular dvd's. But if your really worried an upmixing standalone dvd player is pretty cheap these days anyway.

I use my PS3 for DVD's, burned, and otherwise, I have never had an issue. You'll be fine.
