I know there are a few people on this forum who have made the plunge into using a TV for a computer monitor, and I'm looking really hard at going the same route. Candidate number one is a Samsung 32" 1080P unit presently on sale for $899.99. The specs all look good, although I hear they've recently invented a new way to inflate some of the ratings.
My biggest question is in regards to compatibility. My video card only has DVI-D outlets, the television has none. But I'm given to understand that a DVI-D to HDMI converter dongle just realigns the pins, since they're both digital, making it basically loss-less for the signal. Is that true? Or not?
Secondly, this is almost entirely for gaming, so I'm going to want to run this thing at native resolution. What kind of support is there on the latest games for 1920x1080 resolutions? If I'm going to be stuck trying to convert 16:10 resolutions to 16:9, I'll lose a lot of what I gain, and I might as well just stick to shopping computer monitors.

I can't resolve your first question about the dongle, but as to your 2nd one:
Every game I've bought in the last year has 1920x1080 as a resolution available. My 24" native resolution is 1920x1200, which is sometimes not there, but 1080 is.
All steam games support 16:9. Oblivion does as well. So far that is all I've played on my TV. Almost all monitor manufacturers are starting to produce 16:9 monitors so you'll see games supporting that resolution for some time I believe.
I will never go back to a 16:10 monitor after using a 1080P tv as a monitor.
Don't be suckered into buying one of those $40 adapters either. Go to monoprice.com or firefold.com and order a hdmi-dvi cable for significantly cheaper.

Damn, you're not kidding about the price-gouging. I was expecting it to be a little bad, but...
Got 4 cables enroute from Firefold now, for about $50 (including the shipping). As opposed to the $120-150 (each) cables the Bestbuy rep tried to convince me were necessary for "best system performance".
