A Week With NVIDIA's G-SYNC Monitor (Comment Thread)

NVIDIA's G-SYNC is almost ready for prime time and we've spend a week up close and personal with a supporting monitor. This is one new technology you don't want to miss!

I don't suppose you tried to use the 2D Lightboost hack w/ G-SYNC?

JJThomp December 11, 2013 10:01 PM

I actually stumbled across this on /r/pcmasterrace before I saw it on HWC lol Normally it is me posting your reviews up there but I guess I either recruited some people or I was never alone.

Edit: Actually a question... Would you stick with your nice IPS screen or go with the g-sync screen for the fluidity? or would it depend on the game type and the frames you were pushing?

YukonTrooper December 12, 2013 12:40 AM

I don't think you'll have to make any sacrifices JJ, at least once G-Sync grows some legs after initial launch. I imagine the G-Sync launch products will be 120/140Hz monitors (the Asus QE, for example, will have an upgrade module available soon), but we should see G-Sync hit 60Hz variants sometime after. There's already 3-4 display manufactures officially on-board for G-Sync.

have you tried the gsync side by side with non gsync at 144hz? is there a difference between 60hz gsync and 120hz non gsync is what im asking/.

SKYMTL December 12, 2013 06:29 AM

Yes I have and the differences between 144Hz and G-SYNC are noticeable.

We're thinking of holding an event with NVIDIA to demo it in the GTA and possibly GVA in the spring. You really need to see it in action.

To the other question: my IPS display is ditched for FPS games. For my strategy gaming fix, I'll still use my IPS.

If choosing a monitor came down to cost (as it does for must of us who aren't RJBarker) would you choose a 144hz Lightboost monitor without G_sync, or a 60Hz G-sync enabled monitor? Assuming both those displays are the same price...

SKYMTL December 12, 2013 06:56 AM

I would choose a 60Hz IPS G-SYNC monitor over a 144Hz panel any day of the week. Why? Because those "unannounced features" I hint about in the article may render the LightBoost tweak obsolete.

I can't wait for the G-Sync IPS panels. Hopefully they will be available by the end of 2014. I would love to have a 27" IPS G-Sync panel and my regular 27" IPS.

Since it really comes down to cost for myself I am hoping for some 1080P 60HZ monitors by spring/summer so I can enjoy the benefits myself. Hopefully costs won't be too too bad.
