Exclamation GPU Scaling, How does it work?

I recently purchased a 24 inch 1920*1200 LCD and obviously it is too much for my 320MB 8800GTS. Now I want to drop the Res down to gain some FPS, But I heard that GPU scaling in the Nvidia CP might help me get a better image at lower than native res?
Can someone help me with this issue? I have four options in the CP regarding GPU scailing;
1.Use Nvidia Scaling
2.Use Nvidia scaling with fixed-aspect ratio
3.Use my display's built-in scaling
4.Do not scale
How could scaling help me not just in Crysis but in other games in general.
And mine is stuck in 'Use my Dispaly's built in Scaling', How do I enable the scaling options? mine are grayed out??
