My System Specs

Default

I'm going to bump this back up again as I've run into the same issue with a completely different onkyo amp feeding into a standard 1080p widescreen tv. Same issue... washed out colour via hdmi and in this case I've got the ability to switch between HDMI and VGA inputs in order to compare the two.

Fortunately in this case I've got easy access to the manual so I'll be able to do research, but would appreciate any suggestions on where to look/start.

This is really bizarre, I can't imagine I'm the first one to notice this, or are most folks not bothering to connect their gaming htpcs through amps to get to their tvs?

edit:

Guess I'm looking in the wrong direction.... further testing is pointing towards the HDMI output from the vid card (different from the initial one as well, but also NVidia) as opposed to anything to do with the amp(s). Connecting HDMI direct from the vid card to the TV gives exactly the same poor results when compared to the VGA output.

Time to start digging over on the NVidia website.

Is this for real? Any of our members out there actually using HDMI -> HDMI connections or has everybody been using HDMI -> DVI (or even analog VGA connections) to their monitors / TVs?

My HTPC is setup so that it feeds HDMI from a nvidia gt520 gpu to my Onkyo receiver then back out to my TV.

Colors look perfectly fine to me.. Nice and bright.

This is the main living room TV so I don't have access ATM, but I'll test out the fix when I get a chance. There's a reg hack program for the col our range, and even a suggestion that doing a custom resolution and setting the refresh rate to 59.9 vice 60 will resolve the issue.

At least now I've got reproducable results.

I had to use this recently on my laptop when I connected to a Samsung S23A700D via HDMI to HDMI. This is true, and it's a problem. My laptop is an MSI GT685 with an nVidia GTX 580m.

I used this:

Well, so far no joy. I tried the app and it didn't resolve the issue for me which may or may not be a driver version issue.

This really is both disappointing and annoying... if I didn't already have a VGA connection to this TV I'd have just written off the poor HDMI image quality as being due to using a TV as opposed to a dedicated monitor and been none the wiser. Having the analog VGA connection for comparison suggests to me that it's not a limitation on the display but instead something to do with the HDMI output.

Next step will be to temporarily rob the long HDMI -> DVI cable I'm using on my main rig in order to test the suggestions that DVI out works fine and that the issue rears it's ugly head on HDMI -> HDMI connections.

edit: Bah.... that didn't work.... the cable is recognized as a full HDMI including passing the audio to the TV. I'm assuming it would only work if I had a DVI in on the TV.

Oh well... I'll check around to see if there are any suggestions that one or another driver is better for trying that app, other than that I'll stick with the analog connection and keep this issue in mind if I'm shopping for a new (to me at least) vid card.
