Good to see that so far the majority agree with my thoughts on the topic. I actually assumed more people preferred 21.5" at 1080p.

24" at about 24-36" away. The ratio of screen size to viewing distance is what's most important.

I also like my 11.6-14" laptop resolutions at 1366x768.

I have a U2711 and U2312HM, so yes, 27" needs 1440p and at 23", 1080p seems sufficient though it could be a tad higher, perhaps 2048x1152.

I have yet to switch to widescreen mainly because I have 4 monitors across my desk, 1600x1200 each. anything wider than 20-21 is too big to stretch across my desk

1080p=TV for me. I try not to go so low end for a monitor.
