Default e-IPS vs TN - worth it?

So my good ol' Dell 2405FPW 24" IPS monitor finally bit the dust on me after 8 years of dutiful service. I'm currently using an old 21" monitor (my old secondary monitor) but it's too small and terrible quality so I need to replace it and move it over again.

I've been debating whether to get a decent 24" 1080p TN (under $200), or the Dell U2412M ($300). Is it worth the extra $100-150?

What it's for: gaming. period. RTS, FPS, MMOs. I watch movies with my HTPC and I don't do any photo/video editing and I don't care about viewing angles, 3D, tilting/swiveling, etc. I don't think I really would need the 120Hz option, nor would my graphics card be able to handle it at any reasonable settings.

Some cheap options I was looking at:
ASUS VS248H-P This one seems popular for $180
LG E2442V-BN Found this one for $120 used
ASUS VS239H-P Only 23" but apparently is an IPS monitor
BenQ GW2450HM A-MVA monitor at $175. Is MVA good for gaming?

Anyone have opinions on which option is better value? (between 60Hz TN and eIPS). I'm also open to any suggestions on specific models.

Thanks!

It depends on what's important to you. It's a fact IPS, as a technology, has better colour reproduction and viewing angles. But it seems that less than half the people I know can actually appreciate that unless it's pointed out, and usually don't care enough to think about it again.

For the length of time you'll use the display, $150 is probably a small price to pay. Personally, I'll always choose an IPS or VA panel over TN. I even went out of my way to ensure my notebook has an IPS panel, making it difficult for me to replace.

I've gone from TN, VA and IPS and while I'm not expert.

If you are using it for gaming then TN or VA is probably best. I think there was an article about some BenQ monitors that can be overclocked to 120Hz for better picture and less ghosting.

I would take BenQ or LG, although I'm not a big fan of LG monitors with their newest series.

My issue isn't with TN vrs e-IPS, it's with the 1080p. My personal choice would be a minimum of 1920X1200 for any panel above 22".

I may be unaware of newer panels, but traditionally, VA panels have been the worst for gaming due to slow response times.

So I read a few reviews around the web and people are saying great things about the GW2450HM. Despite being a VA monitor, they somehow managed to get great response times with no ghosting issues (as long as the AMA feature is turned to high or premium). Desiato, apparently the older models were terrible for response times but this generation is comparable if not better than IPS (according to tft central).

The only real trade-off for my purposes is the resolution as sswilson pointed out. I've gotten used to 1200p and I'm not sure how much of a difference moving down to 1080p will make. Perhaps I will go to a store and see if I can compare the different resolutions side by side.

Thanks for the help so far guys!

No expert on them but when I was getting my 2311h I was doing loads of reading on the tn v va v ips...
Seemed to me (unless I'm remembering wrong) that the va is somewhere between the tn and ips.

To the OP, as said by at least 1 person already.. the 1920x1200 on the Dell is Awesome.
A mate just got one on my recommendation and he's agreed with my suggestion and vows never to go back to 16:9 rather than 16:10 that he now has (though it's less of a problem with even higher res.. 27" 2560x1440 and up)

I love IPS monitors.. I use my PC so much and in so many different uses that the IPS gives me a much better experience for soo much more of the time.
If on the other hand your mostly about the gaming and browsing then a TN panel should be fine.. if not better.
