what happened to 16x12/12x16?

anyone know why there are very few lcd's that support the resolution of 1600 x1200 but most if not all support 16??x1080....i know(but am not sure) that the 16x1080 is 1080p...but isnt 16x12 better/higher resolution than 1080?

btw i know viewsonic had one at 16x12 (vp201s) i own one and had a hard time finding more lcds for a triple monitor setup....nec's are rediculously expensive but searching high and low allowed me to discover that dell makes a 16x12 lcd for much less....

any thoughts or reasons is appreciated

You will be more lucky to triple it with 2 * 1920 x 1200, it will be the same high and a perfect fit.

With the popularity of HDTV / movies with the 16:9 resolution, almost all LCD screens you'll find will be at some sort of 16:9 form factor, with 1920x1080 (HD 1080) being the most popular. (I.e. divide the x by the y and the result will equal 16/9 = 1.7 repeating)

The 1600x1200 you speak of is an even older 4:3 config (1600/1200 = 4/3). This "wide screen" fad has changed the monitor form factors from 4:3 to 16:10 (my personal favourite) to 16:9 (TVs).
