My System Specs

Default 30" Monitor - where/what to buy?

I'm looking for a 30" Monitor. I'm not quite ready to buy yet, but I want to shop around a bit and see what there is, what prices are, etc.

1) I looked at NCIX, directCanada and Tigerdirect, and they didn't have ANY 30" monitors listed. Where the hell could I buy one online? Where could I go to actually see the monitor in person? I wouldn't buy from there, but BestBuy? FutureShop? Would they have any?

2) Assuming I have a budget of $500-600$ (say $650 MAX after taxes, but less would be better) what kind of monitor should I be looking at? I'm assuming that IPS will be out of my budget, but I'm okay with that. I sit directly in front of my monitor, so viewing angles aren't really a problem. It's mostly for gaming, so colour reproduction isn't the most important thing in the world. However, the best image quality for the price would be nice. I'm not interested in 3DVision, or any of the other 'gizmos' that could come with a monitor. I use a monitor as a viewing panel and nothing else.

3) I've typically been a little bit of a Samsung fanboi. I've owned 3 Samsung monitors over the past ten years, as well as a Samsung TV. I'm not saying I would absolutely have to go with a Samsung monitor, just that I've had really good experiences with them (including with their RMA department).

And, GO!

I'd look into a 27" monitor in your budget range. I think Dell and HP are the only ones still making 30" and they are $1200 IPS units.

Gaaah. Nooooooooooo.

I was hoping to get a 30" monitor to have the increased resolution. I don't have room or the $$$ for an eyefinity setup (or the patience to deal with driver issues) so I wanted to maximize pixels in one monitor.

You'd probably be good going with the Dell U2711 or that Samsung 850D at 27" as that'll give you 2560 x 1440. I personally have the Samsung 850D, however I'd recommend whichever of the two that are cheaper right now.

Though I believe you're going to be looking at 700-800$ for one of those, and those are the "cheaper" of them right now, going for a 30" you're looking at 900$+

Hmmm, okay. anything in the $500 range?

What if I were to reduce the price a little and look at $300 tn 27" panels? would I really notice a huge difference from TN to IPS? Keep in mind I"m doing absolutely nothing that requires accurate colour fidelity.

Most of the cheap 27" panels are 1920x1080. For your price range I'd look into the Catleap or Yamasaki 27" panels. If you search you can find threads on it here.

You may also be able to pick up a used U2711 or U3011. My U3011 was 900 plus taxes at Dell's 12 Day sale.

Ya, I just looked on NCIX real quick. I'm seeing that even some of the $500-600 monitors are 1920x1080. That's disappointing.

Okay, I was just doing the equivalent of a 'feasibility' study. I may wait a little while before buying anything, then. Or if a financial windfall ever comes my way, that's what I'll spend it on!
