My System Specs

Default To Dual or not to dual

I've been debating my in-home office setup and would like to get the opinions of other computer users/gamers since I am a slave to general consensus.

I have a Mac Mini with a single 24" Samsung LCD and my Windows desktop has two 22" LCDs mounted on a dual display stand. Normally any games I play on the Windows machine run on the primary display while the second stays dormant or I use it to do other tasks in between. I haven't had much luck spanning a single game across both monitors and when I have done so the screen bezels create that annoying gap in the center anyway. Mac is mainly used for iTunes & email.

I've ordered a new HD7870 and am now considering swapping displays around, 24" on desktop & and 2x22" on Mini. Would the dual monitors be overkill on the Mac? The benefit I could see is the single monitor delivers more immersion in games since peripheral vision won't pick up the blank second screen. The trade-off is the HD7870 only has a single DVI port so I would have to use a Displayport-to-DVI adaptor to run the 2nd screen. This is also true if a moved the monitors over to the Mac.

What do you think?

More workspace is always nice, I love dual monitors. If I could have a dual screen laptop for school I would.

Sounds like a good plan, with dual displays on the mac , as you said, you can use it for chats/ mail, monitoring ( and/or remote monitoring of the PC) ect, ect. IMO this is a slightly better setup than just dual on the PC, since clicking (alt-tab) out of a game can sometimes be a pita, with what your proposing you would simple turn and type, ect. I have used a similar setup a fewtimes before, pc= main display, secondary pc handles the other 3 displays, using synergy or mouse without borders to control and switch between machines seamlessly.

I would do dual-monitors on your mac mini if you use it mainly for productivity. I much prefer a single monitor solution for gaming, although I guess I would do 3 for eyefinity if I could afford the desk-space.
